TL;DR
This study reveals incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in CePtAl$_3$ with a specific modulation vector, showing disorder effects and magnetic field-induced transitions between different magnetic structures.
Contribution
It provides the first neutron diffraction evidence of incommensurate magnetic order and field-induced magnetic phase transitions in CePtAl$_3$, highlighting disorder effects.
Findings
Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with modulation vector $(0.676, 0, 0)$
Disorder in transition temperatures attributed to Pt/Al site mixing
Magnetic field induces a transition from cycloidal to amplitude modulated order
Abstract
We report a neutron diffraction study of single-crystal CePtAl complemented by measurements of the specific heat under applied magnetic field. Below =3 K CePtAl develops incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with a single modulation vector =. Residual magnetic scattering intensity above and a broadening of the specific heat anomaly at may be consistently described in terms of a Gaussian distribution of transition temperatures with a standard deviation . The distribution of may be attributed to the observation of occupational and positional disorder between the Pt and Al sites. Measurements under magnetic field reveal unusual changes of the domain populations when the field is applied along the direction consistent with a transition from cycloidal to…
