TL;DR
This paper introduces the fundamental concepts of machine protection systems, focusing on beam loss detection, radiation safety, and the interactions of particles with matter, to ensure safe operation of particle accelerators.
Contribution
It provides a comprehensive overview of machine protection system requirements, including particle interactions, system architecture, and safety measures, serving as an introductory reference.
Findings
Summarizes particle interactions with matter.
Describes architecture of beam loss detection systems.
Discusses radiation shielding and safety protocols.
Abstract
This contribution acts as an introduction to the requirements of the machine protection system. As the first step, the basics interactions of fast charged particles, neutrons and -rays with matter are summarized. The architecture of a machine protection system based on beam loss detection is described. Personal safety issues and personal dosimetry are discussed, including the concept of radiation shielding.
