TL;DR
This study analyzes the characteristics and implications of repeatedly shared external links on Stack Overflow, revealing their types, sharing patterns, and challenges for knowledge maintenance.
Contribution
It provides the first detailed analysis of repeated external links on Stack Overflow, highlighting their types, sharing behaviors, and impact on knowledge management.
Findings
Most repeated links point to documentation and tutorial sites.
Repeated sharing increases maintenance effort for link updates.
Some links are shared for promotional purposes.
Abstract
On Stack Overflow, users reuse 11,926,354 external links to share the resources hosted outside the Stack Overflow website.
