On the nature of the 35-day cycle in HZ Her/Her X-1
N. I. Shakura, D. A. Kolesnikov, K. A. Postnov

TL;DR
This paper investigates the 35-day cycle in HZ Her/Her X-1, proposing that the observed regular pulse period variations are caused by the free precession of the neutron star, based on analysis of Fermi-GBM data.
Contribution
It introduces the hypothesis that neutron star free precession explains the 35-day cycle in Her X-1, supported by observational data analysis.
Findings
Pulse period variations correlate with X-ray flux changes.
Evidence supports neutron star free precession as the cause of the cycle.
Regularity of the cycle suggests a stable precession mechanism.
Abstract
Regular variations of the pulse period of Her X-1 with X-ray flux observed by Fermi-GBM are examined. We argue that these regular variations result from the free precession of the neutron star in Her X-1.
