Measurement of beauty and charm production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV via non-prompt and prompt D mesons
ALICE Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports precise measurements of prompt and non-prompt D meson production in proton-proton collisions at 5.02 TeV, providing data that agree with perturbative QCD and improve understanding of heavy-flavor production.
Contribution
First measurement of D meson cross sections at 5.02 TeV with extended pT coverage and reduced uncertainties, enhancing the precision of heavy-flavor production data.
Findings
Prompt D meson cross sections are well described by pQCD.
The b-bbar production cross section is measured as 34.5 μb at midrapidity.
Fragmentation fractions are consistent across charm and beauty quarks.
Abstract
The -differential production cross sections of prompt and non-prompt (produced in beauty-hadron decays) D mesons were measured by the ALICE experiment at midrapidity () in proton--proton collisions at . The data sample used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of . D mesons were reconstructed from their decays , , and and their charge conjugates. Compared to previous measurements in the same rapidity region, the cross sections of prompt and mesons have an extended coverage and total uncertainties reduced by a factor ranging from 1.05 to 1.6, depending on , allowing for a more precise determination of their…
