Improved prescription for winding an electromagnet
C. B. Crawford, Joseph P. Straley

TL;DR
This paper presents an improved method for designing electromagnet coils using a magnetic scalar potential approach that accounts for helical winding, enhancing field fidelity within the target region while confining fields within the return.
Contribution
The paper introduces a novel coil winding technique that integrates helical winding into the scalar potential design for better magnetic field control.
Findings
High-fidelity magnetic fields within the target region
Fields confined within the return region
Effective incorporation of helical winding in design
Abstract
We describe an improvement on the magnetic scalar potential approach to the design of an electromagnet, which incorporates the need to wind the coil as a helix. Any magnetic field that can be described by a magnetic scalar potential is produced with high fidelity within a Target region; all fields are confined within a larger Return. The helical winding only affects the field in the Return.
