TL;DR
This paper reports the discovery of a galaxy associated with a damped Lyα system at redshift around 3, detecting Lyα emission and estimating its star formation rate, providing insights into DLA host galaxies at high redshift.
Contribution
First detection of a DLA host galaxy at z~3 with Lyα emission, measuring its luminosity, star formation rate, and kinematic offset using integral field spectroscopy.
Findings
Lyα luminosity of (3.8 ± 0.8) × 10^{42} erg/s
Star formation rate ≥ 2 M_sun/yr
Lyα emission blueshifted by 281 km/s
Abstract
We report the detection of the host galaxy of a damped Ly system (DLA) with log N(HI) = at towards the background quasar SDSS J011852+040644 using the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager (PCWI) at the Hale (P200) telescope. We detect Ly emission in the dark core of the DLA trough at a 3.3 confidence level, with Ly luminosity of , corresponding to a star formation rate of (considering a lower limit on Ly escape fraction ) as typical for Lyman break galaxies at these redshifts. The Ly emission is blueshifted with respect to the systemic redshift derived from metal absorption lines by km/s. The associated galaxy is at very small impact parameter of…
