TL;DR
This paper simulates the capabilities of FAST's CRAFTS survey to detect and analyze extragalactic HI galaxies, predicting detection numbers and the survey's potential to measure key properties of the HI mass function up to redshift 0.1.
Contribution
It introduces a simulation framework for the CRAFTS survey's extragalactic HI detection capabilities, combining mock catalogues to estimate galaxy detection and HIMF measurement potential.
Findings
Nearly 480,000 galaxies detectable with two-pass survey
HIMF 'faint end' slope recoverable down to 10^7 solar masses
Survey effective for redshifts below 0.1
Abstract
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) has started the Commensal Radio Astronomy FasT Survey (CRAFTS). In this paper, we use the technical parameters of FAST derived from commissioning observations to simulate the completeness function for extragalactic HI survey of CRAFTS, HI galaxies from two kinds of mock catalogues are selected. One is generated by Monte-Carlo simulation based on the interpolated mass-velocity width function of the ALFALFA (a.k.a. .100) catalogue. The other is constructed by semi-analytical N-body simulation based on the CDM model. Our results suggest that a two-pass extragalactic HI survey will be able to detect nearly galaxies, from which the 'faint end' slope of the HI Mass Function (HIMF) can be recovered to and the 'knee mass' of the HIMF can be measured to a…
