{\it Gaia} DR2 giants in the Galactic dust -- I. Reddening across the whole dust layer and some properties of the giant clump
George A. Gontcharov, Aleksandr V. Mosenkov

TL;DR
This study uses Gaia DR2 data to map the reddening and intrinsic properties of red giant clump stars within 1.8 kpc of the Sun, providing new precise measurements and confirming theoretical models of stellar populations and dust distribution.
Contribution
First precise determination of intrinsic colours and absolute magnitudes of the red giant clump in Gaia bands, with spatial gradients and validation against stellar evolution models.
Findings
Median absolute magnitude in W3 matches recent estimates.
Intrinsic colours and magnitudes in Gaia bands are measured with 0.01 mag precision.
Derived age and metallicity gradients are consistent with recent models.
Abstract
We consider a complete sample of 101810 giants with Gaia DR2 parallaxes within the red clump domain of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in the space cylinder with a radius of 700 pc around the Sun and a height of pc. We use the Gaia DR2 , and WISE photometry. We describe the spatial variations of the modes of the observables , , , , and by extinction and reddening in combination with linear vertical gradients of the intrinsic colours and absolute magnitudes of the red giant clump. The derived clump median absolute magnitude in agrees with its recent literature estimates. The clump median intrinsic colours and absolute magnitudes in and are derived for…
