Search for the lepton flavor violating decay $\tau$ $\to$ 3$\mu$ in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV
CMS Collaboration

TL;DR
This study conducted a search for the lepton flavor violating decay $ au o 3\, ext{mu}$ in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, setting new upper limits on its branching fraction using CMS data from 2016.
Contribution
First search for $ au o 3\, ext{mu}$ decay in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV with CMS, establishing the most stringent upper limit to date.
Findings
No significant excess observed above background.
Upper limit on branching fraction: 8.0 x 10^{-8}.
Expected upper limit: 6.9 x 10^{-8}.
Abstract
Results are reported from a search for the lepton flavor violating decay 3 in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 33.2 fb recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016. The search exploits leptons produced in both W boson and heavy-flavor hadron decays. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction 3 of 8.0 10 at 90% confidence level is obtained, with an expected upper limit of 6.9 10.
