## TL;DR

This paper reviews the soft-aided bit-marking (SABM) algorithm for improving high-density forward error correction decoding, discussing implementation aspects and the impact of imperfect channel information.

## Contribution

It introduces and analyzes the SABM algorithm's effectiveness and implementation considerations for product codes in optical communications.

## Key findings

- SABM enhances HD-FEC decoding performance.
- Implementation details affect SABM effectiveness.
- Suboptimal channel soft information impacts decoding quality.

## Abstract

We review the recently introduced soft-aided bit-marking (SABM) algorithm and its suitability for product codes. Some aspects of the implementation of the SABM algorithm are discussed. The influence of suboptimal channel soft information is also analyzed.
