Abstract

We call an orientation \emph{proper} if neighbouring vertices have different in-degrees. Sci. 639 (2016) 14--25) asked whether there is a constant such that for every outerplanar graph and showed that for every cactus We prove that if is a triangle-free -connected outerplanar graph and if is a triangle-free bridgeless outerplanar graph.

Abstract
An orientation of is a digraph obtained from by replacing each edge by exactly one of two possible arcs with the same endpoints. We call an orientation proper if neighbouring vertices have different in-degrees. The proper orientation number of a graph , denoted by , is the minimum maximum in-degree of a proper orientation of G. Araujo et al. (Theor. Comput. Sci. 639 (2016) 14–25) asked whether there is a constant such that for every outerplanar graph and showed that for every cactus We prove that if is a triangle-free -connected outerplanar graph and if is a triangle-free bridgeless outerplanar graph.

1 Introduction
In this paper we consider graphs with no loops or multiple edges. An embedding of a planar graph into the plane is outerplanar if all vertices of belong to some face of A planar graph is outerplanar if it has an outerplanar embedding. Outerplanar graphs are not only of interest in graph theory, they are also useful in applications, see, e.g., Gutin et al. [6], where it is proved that the so-called vertex horizontal graphs used in the analysis of time series are precisely outerplanar graphs with a Hamilton path.
An orientation of a graph is a digraph obtained from by replacing each edge by exactly one of two possible arcs with the same end-vertices. For each , the in-degree of in , denoted by , is the number of vertices such that An orientation of is proper if , for all . An orientation with maximum in-degree at most is called a proper -orientation. The proper orientation number of a graph , denoted by , is the minimum integer such that admits a proper -orientation.
This graph parameter was introduced by Ahadi and Dehghan [1]. They observed that this parameter is well-defined for any graph since one can always obtain a proper -orientation, where is the maximum degree of . This fact can be proved by induction on the size of by removing a vertex of maximum degree and orienting all edges towards this vertex. Every proper orientation of a graph induces a proper vertex-coloring of . Thus, where is the number of vertices in a maximum clique of . Ahadi and Dehghan [1] proved that it is NP-complete to compute even for planar graphs. Araujo et al. [2] strengthened this result by showing it holds for bipartite planar graphs of maximum degree .
A parameter is monotonic if for every induced subgraph of . Unfortunately, the proper orientation number is not monotonic; an example of a tree and its leaf such as but is given in [3]. This makes it difficult to prove upper bounds on the parameter even for relatively narrow classes of graphs. Araujo et al. [3] asked whether there is a constant such that for every outerplanar graph . They proved that for any cactus (where every 2-connected component is either an edge or a cycle), we have and that for any tree (see also [7] for a short algorithmic proof).
We prove the following results.
Theorem 1**.**
For any triangle-free, -connected, outerplanar graph , we have . The bound is tight.
Note that the intersection between cacti and -connected outerplanar graph consists only of cycles. The proof of Theorem 1 is non-trivial and requires a good understanding of difficult cases in bounding the parameter for a triangle-free -connected outerplanar graph when, using an outerplanar embedding of , is constructed from a cycle by adding ears one by one. In essence, the proof consists of an appropriate algorithm and its correctness proof. The algorithm can be run in linear time.
By increasing the bound by one, we can widen the class of outerplanar graphs as follows. The proofs are based on Theorem 1. A bridge is an edge whose deletion increases the number of connected components of A graph is bridgeless if it has no bridges. We call a graph tree-free if after removing all bridges the 2-connected components have size at least

In the literature, there are some other interesting upper bounds for the parameter on planar graphs. In particular, Knox el al. [7] proved that for a -connected planar bipartite graph and Noguci [8] showed that for any bipartite planar graph with
This paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we give some simple lemmas for proper orientations of a path. In Section 3, we construct triangle-free -connected outerplanar graphs by choosing a finite face and adding to it finite faces one by one such that every newly added face shares precisely one edge; we can talk about adding paths instead of faces. Then we give an algorithm to obtain a proper -orientation of by orienting each added path. In fact, the algorithm has to foresee what further paths will be added, in particular, by paying attention to an especially tricky situation of eventually constructing a -fan (its definition is also given in Section 3). We conclude this section by giving an example of a -connected outerplanar graph with . In Section 4, we provide proofs of Theorems 2 and 3 based on Theorem 1. We conclude the paper in Section 5, where we discuss some open problems.
2 Orientations on paths
In this section, we collect some simple lemmas about proper orientations on paths. For a path we denote by the number of edges of .
Lemma 1**.**

First, let us remark that every vertex of in-degree [math] in a proper orientation of a path with vertices can be replaced by
to obtain a proper orientation of a path with vertices. So it suffices to find an orientation of a path of length and as we can then extend these paths by repeatedly replacing as above. These orientations can be easily found: 2. 2. 3. 3.

Lemma 1 is simple, but very helpful. Let be a graph with a proper orientation. If we are given a path with , then we can add to any of the edges of and using the orientations of Lemma 1 to obtain a proper orientation of the new graph. To see this, consider an edge and a proper orientation of . If , then we use the orientation of such that and . As is a proper orientation, we know that and therefore the orientation of the new graph is proper. (In what follows, we omit subscripts in in-degrees when the orientation is clear from the context.) If , then we use the orientation of such that and . As before, is a proper orientation so and therefore the orientation of the new graph is proper. Now we can reverse the roles of and . Finally if , then we can just set and (or the other way round). Note that the orientations of the edges in and the in-degrees of any vertex in do not change.
If , then the situation becomes more complicated if and . (In all other cases we just choose the orientation of Lemma 1 that avoids the in-degrees.) To deal with this case, we need other proper orientations of graphs. Some orientations are repeated for easier reference later.
Lemma 2**.**
Let be a path with . Then there exists a proper orientation such that , , and
Proof.
As in the proof of Lemma 1, we can replace in any path with a proper orientation a vertex of in-degree [math] by a path of length with both edges oriented inwards to obtain a proper orientation for a path with two more edges. Observe that the second orientation of a path of length satisfies the conditions of this lemma, it suffices to give an orientation of a path of length .

So we only have to consider the paths of length and respectively.

3 Proof of Theorem 1
3.1 Description of the algorithm
Let be a 2-connected, triangle-free, outerplanar graph. Consider an outerplanar embedding of into the plane such that all vertices of belong to the infinite face of We can construct by choosing a finite face (which is a chordless cycle in ) and adding to it finite faces one by one such that every newly added face shares a vertex with one of the previously added faces. Since is -connected, we may assume that every newly added face shares at least an edge with one of the previously added faces. Moreover, the added face shares precisely one edge since is an outerplanar embedding. In what follows, we will talk about adding paths, instead of faces, between the vertices of an edge: such a path and the corresponding edge form the boundary of the corresponding face. We will say that such a path is attached to the corresponding edge.
To describe an algorithm that provides a proper 3-orientation of , we need the following terminology. We call an edge active if there will be a path attached to it in the future. Otherwise we call it inactive. Observe that when we add a path some (but maybe not all) of its edges will be active, then they become inactive and never become active again. Let be an orientation of a subgraph of We call a vertex of with in-degree adjacent to a vertex of in-degree a trouble maker. An edge of is called a - edge if the in-degrees of its end-vertices in are and .
It turns out that active - edges are problematic when the vertex with in-degree is a trouble maker. So assume we have an active - edge so that , and is a trouble maker. Assume we attach to it a path of length oriented as in Lemma 1 part 3. This gives a new active - edge with as a trouble maker. We can repeat this times (to get paths of length altogether), see the following picture for :
If we now want to add a path of length to the active - edge without changing the existing orientation we would get a problem. If a path of length is indeed added we call this structure a -fan and use the orientation as in Figure 1. Later in our construction, we will always make sure that the path between and is oriented in a way that the in-degree of will be (that is, both edges incident to will be oriented towards ) and has in-degree . Note that a [math]-fan is simply a path of length and that we do not include the original - edge in our -fan (we include only the paths of length and the path of length ).
Note that the orientation in Figure 1 creates a new - edge which may be active. If another -fan is added to this edge then we use the orientation in Figure 2 where both edges in the path of length are oriented towards (otherwise the two orientations are identical). Note that will have in-degree equal to when a -fan is added and all the other in-degrees in the original -fan (including ’s) will not change.
As mentioned before edges with a vertex of in-degree and in-degree where the latter is a trouble maker may cause problems. We will anticipate these problems using the following procedure ( Procedure-1), where is an edge and is a trouble maker. Note that calling Procedure-1 often creates a new active - edge and we deal with this by repeatedly calling Procedure-1 until there is no active - edge stemming from the original edge .
**Procedure-1
If** no path gets attached to then exit.
If a -fan gets attached to then let be the vertex of the -cycle of degree adjacent to .
If will get attached a -fan then use the orientation of a -fan as in Figure 2 and run Procedure-1.

If a -fan is attached to then use Lemma 2 to orient and call Procedure-1 [Note that will have in-degree after Procedure-1 has finished and that as otherwise would be part of the fan.]

Now we can describe our algorithm, which uses the following Procedure-2 to avoid too many nested if-then statements. This procedure is only used in one particular case if a path of length is added to an edge with trouble maker and with having in-degree . In this case, if we use Lemma 1 we will create two active - edges and therefore we have to be a bit more careful. The edge will be the edge incident to on and we will assume that there is no -fan on when calling this procedure. The reader may want to come back to this procedure when it is called in the algorithm.

(A0) Choose an embedding of with all the vertices on the outer face. Choose a face and orient it using Lemma 1 identifying and (or orient it in any other proper way).

3.2 Correctness of the algorithm
Let be an orientation of a subgraph of A path of length 2 in is a -- path (with respect to ) if the internal vertex of is of in-degree and the other two vertices are of in-degrees and in .
Lemma 6**.**
The only way to get an active edge such that is a trouble maker and is to attach a path or a -fan to an edge incident to a trouble maker.
Proof.
We first look at ways to create vertices of in-degree . In step (A1) we cannot create a new vertex of in-degree . In step (A2) we create a vertex of in-degree , but it cannot have a neighbour of in-degree as we started with a proper orientation and had in-degree before we attached the path of length and the in-degree of no other vertex changes. Therefore we cannot create a -- path in this step. ∎
Lemma 7**.**
At each iteration of the main while-loop there is no active - edge of a -- path.
Proof.
We have seen in Lemma 6 that we cannot get an active - edge of a -- path in (A1) and (A2). So now assume the lemma is true as we enter (A3). If a -fan is attached, then the neighbour of in will have in-degree and the neighbour of in will have in-degree at most . So does not create a new trouble maker and no new -- path. We then may repeatedly call Procedure-1. Note that we may create an active - edge in a -- path but we immediately will call Procedure-1 on these edges. We only finish when no more paths or -fans are attached and so the - edge is inactive.
We can argue similarly for (A4) but here we have some added complications because and we do not want to introduce a new -- path. We do so by insuring that either the vertex adjacent to in has in-degree (if is even, ) or has in-degree but its neighbour has in-degree equal to [math] ( odd, ). Also we may add the path of length in which case we get two active - edges in a -- path if we use Lemma 1. Note, that adding a path of length to a - edge (i.e. an edge with vertex in-degrees and ) is the only way to create more than one active - edge in a -- path.
We deal with this case by first considering the -- path that contains only one edge of the new path. If a -fan is added then we choose a different orientation of the path (see Figure 3), which yields the in-degree sequence , , , , where the degree vertex is (and remains) the trouble maker. In this case, we do not have to deal with a second active - edge. We may create a new active - edge which is part of the -fan but we repeatedly use Procedure-1 until no more paths or -fans get added to such an edge.
If a -fan is added to the edge not containing the trouble maker then we also change the orientation of the path and either add a path of length (in case of a [math]-fan) or one path of length of the -fan. In either case, we do not create a new - edge and do not have to use Procedure-1.
If no fan is added to either of these edges then we just use Lemma 1 and then Procedure-1 on both edges until no active - edge is present. ∎
It is now straightforward to check that using our algorithm we create a proper 3-orientation of at the end of each step (A1), (A2), (A3) and (A4). Thus Theorem 1 follows.
3.3 A -connected triangle-free outerplanar graph with
Consider the -connected outerplanar graph consisting of one cycle of length and a path of length attached to each of its edges, see Figure 4.
Assume for a contradiction that we can orient the graph in such a way that the maximum in-degree is less than . The only way to orient the -cycle without creating a --edge is to orient the edges cyclicly so that every vertex in has in-degree equal to . Note that a --edge in would mean that we cannot orient the path of length attached to in a proper way without increasing the in-degree of one of the endpoints of ; and since the orientation should remain proper that means that the in-degree of one vertex has to become . But if all the in-degrees on are equal to one, then we do not have a proper orientation, so when we attach the first path of length to an edge , one of the vertices of will get an in-degree of . Observe that the other edge incident to in is still active and this forces the orientation to give in-degree as above.
4 Proofs of Theorems 2 and 3
A block in a graph is a maximal 2-connected subgraph of A block tree of a connected graph denoted by is a bipartite graph with bipartition , where is the set of blocks of and is the set of cut-vertices of , a block and a cut-vertex being adjacent in if and only if contains . It is not hard to see that is a tree [5].
To prove Theorem 2, it suffices to consider a connected, bridgeless, outerplanar graph . Choose a block of as a root of and apply breadth-first search on from to visit all blocks of one by one. Now if we consider the blocks of in the order they were visited, we can orient the edges of one block and then extend it to another block sharing a cut-vertex as follows, without ever encountering a block we have already oriented.
Let be an outerplanar embedding of into the plane. Consider and orient its edges as in Section 3. Assume that we have oriented the edges of blocks and we wish to orient edges of Assume that a cut-vertex is the parent of on the rooted tree and let be the orientation of If , then we choose a face of in containing and use Lemma 2, where we identify and with to get the orientation of the border cycle of in If , we just orient the edges towards as in Lemma 3 so that will have in-degree . Note that we only change an in-degree vertex to an in-degree vertex, so no in-degree vertices will ever be adjacent. Now we can just proceed orienting with our algorithm for the -connected case.
Now consider a connected, triangle-free, tree-free, outerplanar graph . We proceed similarly to the bridgeless case, but now sometimes two blocks are connected by a bridge instead of a cut-vertex. So assume we have oriented the edges in and we want to orient the edges of connected to via a bridge where . We orient towards . If the in-degree of in the orientation of does not equal , then we consider a face of containing in and orient its border cycle using Lemma 2 identifying and with . If the in-degree of in does equal , then we use Lemma 3 to obtain a vertex of in-degree . Note that the neighbours of in have in-degree [math] in , so we do not create a -- path. We can now proceed to orient the edges in as in Section 3.
5 Open Problems
We do not know whether the bounds of Theorems 2 and 3 are tight or not. However, this is not important in attacking the open question of whether there is a constant such that for every outerplanar graph . Thus, it would be more interesting to obtain a non-trivial extension of Theorem 3 by either removing the condition that is triangle-free or that is tree-free. Another way of attacking the open question is to extend the cactus bound of [3] from cacti to a wider class of graphs.
