Our proof is fully constructive, and extends to dense geometric graphs.

We show that any set of points in general position in the plane determines pairwise crossing segments. The best previously known lower bound, , was proved more than 25 years ago by Aronov, Erdős, Goddard, Kleitman, Klugerman, Pach, and Schulman. Our proof is fully constructive, and extends to dense geometric graphs.
1 Introduction
Let be a set of points in general position in the plane, that is, assume that no points of are collinear. A geometric graph is a graph whose vertex set is and whose edges are represented by possibly crossing straight-line segments connecting certain pairs of points in . If every pair of points in is connected by a segment, we have , and is called a complete geometric graph. Two edges are said to cross if the corresponding segments share an interior point. Topological graphs are defined similarly, except that their edges can be represented by any Jordan curves that have no interior points that belong to . In the present paper, we investigate crossing patterns of curves, mainly segments. The above general position assumptions will simplify the presentation, but our theorems hold without them. In particular, for our purposes, it is sufficient to consider topological graphs whose edges are non-selfintersecting polygonal curves.
Crossing patterns and intersection graphs. Finding maximum cliques or independent sets in intersection graphs of segments, rays, and other convex sets in the plane is a computationally hard problem and a classic topic in computational and combinatorial geometry [4, 10, 24, 36, 37, 38]. There are many interesting Ramsey-type problems and results about the existence of large cliques or large independent sets in intersection graphs of segments [7, 11, 40, 41, 48] and, more generally, of Jordan curves (“strings”) [23, 29, 25]. Some of these questions are intimately related to counting incidences between points and lines [47, 52, 53], and to bounding the complexity of -levels in arrangements of lines in [16].
It appears to be a somewhat simpler task to understand the combinatorial structure of crossings between the edges of a geometric or topological graph. Despite decades of steady progress, we have very few asymptotically tight results in this direction. Perhaps the best known and most applicable theorem of this kind is the so-called Crossing Lemma of Ajtai, Chvátal, Newborn, Szemerédi [6] and Leighton [42], which states that any topological graph with determines at least crossing pairs of edges. Recently, a similar result has been established by the authors for contact graphs of families of Jordan curves [46].
According to another asymptotically tight result, for , every geometric graph with edges has two disjoint sets of edges, , each of size , such that every edge in crosses all edges in ; see, e.g., [23, Theorem 6]. A similar theorem holds for topological graphs, with the difference that then [25]. It is a major unsolved question to decide whether under these circumstances must also contain a family of pairwise crossing edges, whose size tends to infinity as ; see [9], Chapter 9.6, Problem 1. It is conjectured that one can always choose such a family consisting of almost edges. If this stronger conjecture is true for edges, then for , it would imply that every complete geometric or topological graph on vertices has pairwise crossing edges (cf. [9], Chapter 9.6, Problem 4).
A topological graph is called -quasi-planar if it contains no pairwise crossing edges. Let (and ) denote the maximum number of edges that a -quasi-planar geometric (resp., topological) graph of vertices can have. Clearly, we have , for every and . For geometric graphs, Valtr [57] proved that , but in general the best known upper bound is only [23, 26, 27]. It is conjectured that , which is known to be true only for ; see [1, 2, 3].
Our results. The aim of the present paper is to find many pairwise crossing edges in dense geometric graphs. For every , let denote the largest positive integer with the property that any complete geometric graph with vertices has at least pairwise crossing edges. Equivalently, is the largest number such that any set of points in general position in the plane determines at least pairwise crossing segments. (A segment is determined by if both of its endpoints belong to .)
It was proved by Aronov, Erdős, Goddard, Kleitman, Klugerman, Pach, and Schulman [8] ipn 1991 that , cf. [56]. Since then no one has been able to improve this bound. The prevailing conjecture is that [9]. A slightly sublinear lower bound holds for “uniformly distributed” point sets, in which the ratio of the largest distance and the smallest distance between two points is [55]. Note that a very recent construction by Evans and Saeedi [18] yields , which was lately improved to by a group of Czech and Austrian researchers [5].
Our main theorem comes close to settling the above conjecture in the affirmative, and applies in a more general setting.
Theorem 1.1**.**
(i) Any set of points in general position in the plane determines at least pairwise crossing segments.
(ii) There exists an absolute constant such that any geometric graph with vertices and at least edges with has at least pairwise crossing edges.
Ignoring the specific order of the error term, part (i) of the theorem implies the existence of pairwise crossing edges in a complete geometric graph with vertices, while part (ii) implies the same in all geometric graphs with vertices and edges. Both parts of the theorem will follow from Lemma 3.4 presented in Section 3, which is the heart of our argument.
Our proof of Theorem 1.1 is fully constructive. The crossing segments can be found by an efficient algorithm whose running time is near-quadratic in for complete or dense geometric graphs. Our construction heavily relies on the assumption that the segments are straight, but otherwise it is fairly robust. Below we briefly sketch the main ideas of our proof of Theorem 1.1.
The main observation of Aronov et al. [8] was that any -point set in general position in the plane contains a pair of subsets, and , each of cardinality that can be separated by a line, and so that all the points in see the points in in the same order, and vice versa. Such a pair is called avoiding, and its properties are reviewed in Subsection 2.1. Connecting each point of to the “opposite” point of , we obtain a family of pairwise crossing segments; see Figure 1. Valtr [56] showed that, for certain instances of , one cannot find an avoiding pair with greater than some constant times .
The key insight that allows us to get around this barrier is that we do not necessarily have to find two avoiding point sets in order to complete our proof. We can still proceed, albeit in a somewhat trickier manner, if we can find two -element sets, and , with close to , which are “nearly avoiding” in the following sense. The points of are separated from the points of by a line, and all points of see the points in in the same “approximate” order and vice versa. More precisely, we will introduce two partial orders on and on with only incomparable pairs. To obtain such a nearly avoiding pair with , we use the -net machinery from computational geometry [44].
Armed with our weaker variant of avoidance, we further partition most points in (resp., ) into smaller subfamilies (resp., ) so that any two vertices of that are incomparable under lie in the same set , and a symmetric property holds for . It is easy to check that for any four distinct sets and , the property that an edge crosses another edge is independent of the choice of representatives . Finally, we use Mirsky’s theorem (the dual of Dilworth’s Theorem [45]) to obtain a large family of pairwise crossing such “super-edges” while also maintaining the “nearly avoiding” property of these pairs. (See Figure 2.)
Paper organization. The rest of the paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we collect the essential facts needed for the proof of Theorem 1.1. Specifically, in Subsection 2.1 we establish two lemmas concerning partially ordered sets and their application to families of pairwise crossing segments. In Subsection 2.2, we present a partition result (implicitly shown by Matoušek [44]) which will be instrumental in finding large point sets that satisfy our approximate version of avoidance.
The proof of Theorem 1.1 is given in Section 3. We first obtain a pair of nearly avoiding sets , each of cardinality , and then we show that they induce a large family of pairwise crossing edges.
Section 4 contains some remarks, including a brief discussion of the constructive aspects of Theorem 1.1. We also provide an analogue of Theorem 1.1 which yields many pairwise evading edges in dense geometric graphs. Here, two edges are said to be evading if the supporting line of neither of them intersects the closure of the other [8, 49, 57]. In particular, evading edges must be disjoint.
2 Preliminaries
2.1 Partially ordered sets
We use the term poset for finite partially ordered sets . If the ordering is clear from the context, we write to indicate that the elements are incomparable. Let denote the number of incomparable pairs of elements in . For subsets and of we write if for all and .
We start with the following lemma which is somewhat similar to Theorem 4 (ii) in [54].

For any pair of distinct points in the plane, and , write if is contained in ; see Figure 3 (left). The convex hull of a set is denoted by .
Lemma 2.2**.**
Let and be nonempty sets in the plane such that their convex hulls are disjoint. Then defines a partial order on , in which two distinct points and are incomparable if and only if the line through and intersects . Further, if for and for , then the segments and cross.
Proof.
To check transitivity, let us assume that and for a triple of points ; see Figure 3 (right). This means that both and contain . We have

The distinct points and are incomparable in if and only if is not contained in either of the open half-planes bounded by the line , which happens if and only if the line intersects the convex hull of .
Finally, for any and that satisfy the inequalities and , the quadrilateral must be strictly convex, so the diagonals and must cross. ∎
Definition. A chain in a poset is defined as a sequence , so that for all . Accordingly, an antichain in a poset is a subset of elements no two of which are comparable.
Theorem 2.3** (Mirsky [45]).**
Let be a finite poset. Then the length of the largest chain in is equal to the size of its smallest possible decomposition into antichains , for .
From partial orders to pairwise crossing segments. Two finite point sets and in are called avoiding [8] if , and each of the induced partial orders and (defined in the paragraph above Lemma 2.2) is a total order; that is, we have and . Equivalently, each point in sees the points of in exactly the same counter-clockwise order , and vice versa.
Aronov et al. [8] established one-to-one correspondence between the elements of any avoiding pair , for , such that any two segments formed by the corresponding points cross each other (as is illustrated on the right-hand side of Figure 6). Indeed, as linearly orders and vice versa, we have that with , and, analogously, with . By Lemma 2.2, the segments are pairwise crossing, for . Furthermore, they showed that any -element point set contains a pair of avoiding subsets with . Hence, every set of points in general position in the plane determines pairwise crossing segments. As was mentioned in the Introduction, this approach cannot yield any better result, because there are -element point sets in which the smaller of every pair of avoiding subsets has size .
However, avoidance is not a necessary condition for the existence of large families of pairwise crossing segments between the two sets, and . In Section 3, we relax this condition. We introduce the notion of “nearly avoiding” pairs of sets, and, using the partition result introduced in the next subsection, we show that every -element point set in the plane contains two almost linear-sized subsets, and , that form a nearly avoiding pair. We complete the proof of Theorem 1.1 by selecting close to pairwise crossing edges from the set of all segments connecting and .
2.2 Line arrangements
Any finite family of lines in induces the arrangement – the partition of into -dimensional cells, or -faces. Each of these cells is a maximal connected region of ; it is a (possibly unbounded) convex polygon whose boundary is composed of edges – portions of the lines of , which connect vertices – crossings amongst the lines of .
The zone of a line within the arrangement is the union of all the (open) cells that intersects; see Figure 4. The following result was implicitly established by Matoušek [44]; it comprises most of the proof of the so called Test Set Lemma.
Lemma 2.4** (Matoušek, [44]).**
For any -element point set in general position in the plane and for any , we can find lines such that the zone of any other line within their arrangement contains at most points of .
For his proof, Matoušek [44] used a result of Chazelle and Friedman [14], according to which any set of lines admits an optimal -cutting. In other words, one can partition the plane into simply shaped cells (triangles or trapezoids, some of which are unbounded) with the property that every cell is crossed by at most lines. He applied this result to the dual line set of [43, Section 5], and argued that the duals of the vertices of this cutting (that correspond to lines in the primal plane) satisfy the requirements of Lemma 2.4. Before giving a formal proof of the lemma, we outline a more explicit argument which yields the same result with the slightly weaker bound . This bound also suffices for our calculations.
We consider all angular sectors in ; each of them can be obtained as the intersection of two open half-planes. We construct a set of points which pierces every angular sector that contains at least points of ; such a set is known as an -net. In accordance with the standard theory of (strong) -nets [33], angular sectors have a bounded VC-dimension (namely, ), so we can find such a net with . Note that the family of all lines determined by the point set is of size . To see that this family satisfies the requirements of the lemma, it suffices to check that the zone of any line is contained in the union of at most four angular sectors, each disjoint from . We show that the part of the zone in a half-plane bounded by can be covered by two such angular sectors. For simplicity, we assume does not pass through any point in and is not parallel to a line determined by two points in . These restrictions are not essential but allow us to avoid a case analysis. If is empty or consists of collinear points, then the statement is trivial. Otherwise, let be the closest point to in and let be the smallest angular sector with apex , whose closure contains ; see Figure 5. Notice that the two delimiting lines of belong to the family . It readily follows that is disjoint from , it is the union of two angular sectors, and it contains the part of the zone of inside .
Proof of Lemma 2.4.
Let denote the set of lines dual to the points of . Since the points of are in a general position, an analogous condition must hold for the dual set : no three lines in can meet at the same point. Furthermore, a generic rotation of the orthogonal axes guarantees that none of these lines can be horizontal or vertical. We construct an optimal -cutting of the dual plane with respect to [14]. Namely, is a decomposition of the dual plane into interior-disjoint triangles with the property that each of these triangles is crossed by at most dual lines belonging to .111Some of the vertices of these triangles may lie at infinity on one of the imaginary lines , , , , which are incorporated in .
Our set, which we denote by , consists of the lines dual to the vertices of . To see that satisfies the asserted property, let be an arbitrary non-vertical line in the primal plane. Assume first that the dual point is contained in the relative interior of some triangle . Since the lines in are in a general position, the argument readily extends to the points that lie on boundaries of the triangles of . The crucial observation is that for any point of that lies in the zone of within the arrangement of , its dual line must cross the boundary of the triangle (or, else, will be “separated” from by the lines dual to the vertices of ); see [12] for the precise details. Hence, the number of such points cannot exceed . ∎
3 Proof of Theorem 1.1
We begin by introducing more terminology.
Definition 3.1**.**
Two point sets are called separated if . Two separated -element sets, and , are said to form an -avoiding pair for some if

To be able to deal with geometric graphs that are not complete, we introduce a further definition. Let be a geometric graph. For any subsets , let denote the set of edges connecting a vertex in with a vertex in .
Definition 3.2**.**
Given a geometric graph and a number , a pair of disjoint -element subsets of is -dense with respect to if .
If it is clear what the underlying geometric graph is, with no danger of confusion we simply say that the pair is -dense. Our next result states that in every sufficiently large and dense geometric graph, one can find two separated -element sets that form an -avoiding -dense pair.
Lemma 3.3**.**
There exists an absolute constant with the following property. For any integer and any reals , every geometric graph with and has two separated -element sets of vertices that form an -avoiding -dense pair with respect to .
Proof.
Let us set . We use Lemma 2.4 to obtain an arrangement of a set of lines such that the zone of any line contains at most points of . We assume that .
Using parallel segments or half-lines that do not pass through any point of , split each cell of into smaller cells such that all but at most one of them contain precisely elements of , and if there is an exceptional cell, it contains fewer than points. Denote the resulting cell decomposition of by . Obviously, every cell in is convex. The set of points of inside a non-exceptional cell of is called a cluster; see Figure 7. Denoting the number of clusters by , we have .
Let denote the set of points in that do not belong to any cluster. Such a point must lie either in an exceptional cell of or on a line of . There are at most exceptional cells, each containing fewer than points in , and has lines, each passing through at most points in . Thus, we have . Every edge of belongs to one of the following categories:
(i) it has a vertex belonging to , or
(ii) it connects a pair of vertices in the same cluster, or
(iii) it connects a pair of vertices in distinct clusters that do not form a -dense pair, or
(iv) it connects a pair of vertices in distinct clusters that form a -dense pair.

We can estimate according to the point pairs incomparable with respect to a cluster. An unordered pair of distinct vertices will contribute to the sum only if and come from the same cluster, and in this case its contribution will be the number of other clusters whose convex hulls are crossed by the line . The heart of the proof is the following partition result.
Lemma 3.4**.**
Let , , and be positive integers, and set , . Let and be two separated sets of vertices in a geometric graph with . Suppose that is a -dense, -avoiding pair.
Then we can find pairwise disjoint -element subsets , such that for every , is a -dense, -avoiding pair and, for , all edges in cross every edge in .
Proof.
It follows from the assumption that is an -avoiding pair that the posets and both satisfy the conditions of Lemma 2.1 with and with in place of . Indeed, by Definition 3.1, we obtain

Lemma 2.2 implies that all edges in cross every edge in as long as , which suggests to select the pairs from among the the pairs . Unfortunately, many of these pairs might not be -dense or -avoiding. We must be careful when we select a suitable pair for a set . Any collection of -dense, -avoiding pairs will work here (still by Lemma 2.2), as long as is a monotone increasing function of .
Since is an -dense pair and , by definition we have

If points and in are incomparable in , they are still comparable with respect to all but at most one ordering , .
Proof of Claim 3.5.
To verify this claim, suppose for a contradiction that and are incomparable in both and for some ; see Figure 8 (right). Hence, the line must cross both and .
On the other hand, since any two points and satisfy , for every triple , and we have that and . It readily follows that is separated from by a common tangent to and . In particular, and must be disjoint.
Assume with no loss of generality that the directed line meets and in this order. Fix and . Then the line meets between and . Hence, both and must lie in the half-plane , which contradicts the assumption that . (If the line meets before , we apply a symmetric argument with and .) ∎

All pairs are separated and consist of -element sets. Call such a pair eligible if it is both -dense and -avoiding. As we saw above, the number of -dense pairs is larger than . We have just seen that fewer than of them are not -avoiding. Thus, the number of eligible pairs is larger than .
Define a partial order on the set of eligible pairs as follows. Let if and . If there was no monotone chain of length with respect to this partial order, then by the dual of Dilworth’s theorem [45] all eligible pairs could be covered by fewer than antichains (i.e., fewer than sets of pairwise incomparable eligible pairs). The value is distinct for each pair in an antichain. Here we have , so antichains have fewer than eligible pairs. Hence, in this case the total number of eligible pairs would be smaller than , contradicting our above estimate.
Thus, there exists a monotone chain of eligible pairs, say . These pairs obviously satisfy the requirements of Lemma 3.4. ∎
By repeated application of Lemma 3.4, we obtain the following result.
Lemma 3.6**.**
Let and be positive integers such that is a multiple of , and set , , and .
There exists a positive integer such that for any two -element sets of vertices, and that form a -dense -avoiding pair in a geometric graph , the set of edges connecting them contains pairwise crossing elements.
Proof.
We prove the lemma by induction on . The statement is trivial for , as in this case we have , so we can choose and select any one edge from (which is nonempty, because ).
Let and assume that the statement holds for in place of . We apply Lemma 3.4 with , , and . Setting , the lemma states that given a -dense -avoiding pair with , we can find pairwise disjoint -element subsets and such that is a -dense -avoiding pair for every , and every edge in crosses all edges in , provided that . For each , we use the inductive hypothesis with the same and with in place of to find a family of pairwise crossing edges in . Note that is -avoiding. To apply the induction hypothesis, we need that is -avoiding, but this holds, as

Part (ii) of Theorem 1.1 follows by combining Lemmas 3.3 and 3.6.
Proof of Theorem 1.1(ii).
Let have vertices and at least edges with . We set the value of later and set . Apply Lemma 3.3 with , and from Lemma 3.6. The density condition of Lemma 3.3 is satisfied, so if is large enough, we obtain separated vertex sets and of size forming a -dense, -avoiding pair. If this happens, we apply Lemma 3.6 with the parameters and to obtain pairwise crossing edges in .
It remains to do the calculation to check what value we can choose for and how many pairwise crossing edges we find this way. We can apply Lemma 3.3 if for the absolute constant in that lemma. Using and the formulas defining and , we see that suffices. In case , we have . Here , so and . We also have , since by our lower bound on . We have as claimed.
In the above line of reasoning we assumed that the size of is just suitable, namely , but barely. In the general case, we simply set the value of the parameter to be the largest possible value. That is, we still have , but the same formula is violated if is increased by one. Note that increasing to changes the values of to and to . We have . We still have , as needed. Finally, if even the choice of is not feasible, then finding any one edge of the graph suffices. ∎
Note that a complete graph on vertices has edges for . Thus, part (i) of Theorem 1.1 would follow as a special case of part (ii), if not for the requirement there. Because of this, part (ii) directly implies the existence of only pairwise crossing segments determined by points in the plane in general position. To obtain the slightly stronger estimate claimed in part (i) of Theorem 1.1 we have to do the calculations again for the special case of the complete geometric graph. Here we do not have to worry about maintaining the density condition. We can apply Lemmas 3.3 and 3.4 as stated, but we have to prove an analogue of Lemma 3.6.
Lemma 3.7**.**
Let be a positive integer and set , , . Suppose the -element point sets and form a -avoiding pair and is in general position. Then we can find pairwise crossing segments, each connecting a point of to a point of .
Proof.
We prove the lemma by induction on . For we have , so the statement is trivial.
If we apply Lemma 3.4 with , and to the complete geometric graph on . As and form a -avoiding -dense pair, the lemma finds us pairwise disjoint -element subsets and , for , such that is -avoiding for all and each edge in crosses all edges in whenever . We apply the inductive hypothesis for in place of separately for each pair . This results in a subset of consisting of pairwise crossing edges. Their union, is a subset of consisting of pairwise crossing edges, as claimed. ∎
Proof of Theorem 1.1(i).
We assume . Let us choose to be the smallest positive integer such that does not determine pairwise crossing segments. Note that , as determines at least pairwise crossing segments. By Lemma 3.7, we do not have size subsets and of forming an -avoiding pair with . The complete geometric graph on the vertex set has vertices and edges with . Applying Lemma 3.3 to this graph yields .
By the choice of , determines at least pairwise crossing segments. Therefore, , so we must have . But we also have , as claimed. ∎
4 Discussion and related results
- •
Theorem 1.1 represents a substantial step towards characterizing the intersection structure of the edges in a geometric graph. We hope that further progress in this direction would facilitate the solution other unsolved problems in combinatorial and computational geometry. The two most notorious questions of this kind are the following. Determine (1) the maximum number of halving lines of a set of points in , and (2) the maximum number of incidences that can occur between points and pseudo-algebraic222We say that a family of curves in is pseudo-algebraic if any two of the curves intersect at most a fixed number of times. In particular, this includes families of bounded-degree algebraic curves. curves in . Note that the best known general upper bounds for these problems [16, 47] are obtained by applying the Crossing Lemma to a suitable geometric or topological graph. Following the pioneering work of Dvir [17], Guth and Katz [31, 32], several of these questions have been revisited from an algebraic perspective [21, 34, 50].

A closely related line of work [35, 39, 49, 57] concerns pairwise evading edges in geometric graphs. We say that a pair of segments in the plane are evading if (the closure of) neither of them is crossed by the supporting line of the other segment. Note that the methods of Aronov et al. [8] imply that any set of points in general position in the plane determines pairwise evading segments. Analogously, our techniques yield the following result.
Theorem 4.1**.**
(i) Any set of points in general position in the plane determines at least pairwise evading segments.
(ii) There exists an absolute constant such that any geometric graph with vertices and at least edges, for some , has at least pairwise evading edges.
Part (i) of Theorem 4.1 easily follows from Theorem 1.1 via a reduction in [8, Theorem 2], while both parts can be derived using the following slight modification of Lemma 3.4: For any separated -dense, -avoiding pair with , as in Lemma 3.4, there exist -element subsets , so that for every , the pair is -dense and -avoiding, and, for , all edges in evade every edge in .
To verify this statement, we closely follow the proof of Lemma 3.4. Specifically, we consider the partial orders and , and use the following geometric property: if for and for , then the segments and are evading, because , and form a convex quadrilateral. Recall that Lemma 3.4 yielded -size subsets and of and , respectively. Note that whenever and , all edges in evade every edge in ; see Figure 9. Now we apply Mirsky’s theorem to the modified partial order, in which if and only if and .

Our proof of Theorem 1.1, just like the arguments of Aronov et al. [8], crucially relies on the assumption that the edges of our graph are straight-line segments. In particular, the decomposition provided by Lemma 2.4 is based on the machinery that was developed in computational geometry to support efficient searching in arrangements of lines and hyperplanes. Extending Theorem 1.1 to more general families of topological graphs (e.g., whose edges are contained in fixed-degree algebraic curves, or any two of whose edges cross a bounded number of times) would require new ideas. Most of the previous lower bounds of this kind are based on Ramsey-type results applied to the intersection graph of the edge set [7, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 29].
For example, Fox and Pach [23] argued that, with a suitable constant , any -vertex topological graph in the plane with at least edges must contain pairwise crossing edges all of whose vertices are distinct. In other words, using the terminology introduced in the Introduction, any -quasi-planar topological graph has at most edges. Their recursive analysis rests on the crucial observation that for any topological graph at least crossing pairs of edges, there exist subsets of cardinality such that every edge in crosses every edge in . Furthermore, if we assume that every pair of edges in cross a bounded number of times (e.g., if they are bounded-degree semi-algebraic curves [7]), we can set [29]. This is a special case of the following general Turán-type phenomenon: any sufficiently dense string graph (in particular, the intersection graph of the edge set ) must contain a copy of [25].
It is possible that several of the above bounds can be improved by a careful divide-and-conquer scheme applied to the vertex set , in the spirit of our proof of Theorem 1.1.

Our proof of Theorem 1.1 is fully constructive. As the primary focus of this study is on the combinatorial aspects of geometric graphs, we did not seek to optimize the construction cost of our family of pairwise crossing edges. Nevertheless, our argument yields an algorithm whose running time is if the input graph has at least edges (for ). Specifically, the -size line set of Lemma 2.4 can be computed in time , using the deterministic algorithm of Chazelle [13] for finding an optimal cutting of the dual plane. The -avoiding -dense pair (together with the posets and ) in Lemma 3.3 can be computed, using a naive implementation, in time. The initial decomposition and of the sets and in Lemma 3.4 can be obtained (as designated in Lemma 2.1) via a simple topological sorting of the posets and , and in time that is at most quadratic in . The induced incomparability graphs (and, therefore, the eligible pairs ) can be determined in time . The desired longest chain of eligible pairs can be obtained in time (again, via the standard topological sorting of their poset [15]).
