Subject to announced results by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle, we completely characterize the highly connected members of the classes of dyadic, near-regular, and sixth-root-of-unity matroids.

1. Introduction
We give the definitions of the classes of dyadic, signed-graphic, near-regular, and -matroids in Section 2; however, unexplained notation and terminology in this paper will generally follow Oxley [15]. One exception is that we denote the vector matroid of a matrix by rather than . A matroid is vertically -connected if, for every set with , either or is spanning. If is vertically -connected, then its dual is cyclically -connected. The matroids , , and are obtained from by adding three specific points to a flat of rank , , and , respectively; we give the precise definitions in Section 4.
Due to the technical nature of Hypotheses 3.1 and 3.2, we delay their statements to Section 3. Subject to these hypotheses, we characterize the highly connected dyadic matroids by proving the following.
Theorem 1.1**.**
Suppose Hypothesis 3.1 holds. Then there exists such that, if is a -connected dyadic matroid with at least elements, then one of the following holds:
- (1)
Either or is a signed-graphic matroid. 2. (2)
Either or is a matroid of rank that is a restriction of , , or .
Moreover, suppose Hypothesis 3.2 holds. There exist such that, if is a simple, vertically -connected, dyadic matroid with an -minor, then either is a signed-graphic matroid or is a restriction of , , or .
Let be the matroid resulting from by deleting one point; this matroid is unique up to isomorphism. We prove the following excluded-minor characterization of the highly connected dyadic matroids.
Theorem 1.2**.**
Suppose Hypothesis 3.1 holds. There exists such that, for a -connected matroid with at least elements, is dyadic if and only if is a ternary matroid with no minor isomorphic to either or . Moreover, suppose Hypothesis 3.2 holds. There exist such that, for a vertically -connected matroid with an -minor, is dyadic if and only if is a ternary matroid with no minor isomorphic to .
Our final main result characterizes the highly connected near-regular and -matroids. The matroid is obtained from the complete graphic matroid by adding a point freely to a triangle, contracting that point, and simplifying. We denote the non-Fano matroid by .
Theorem 1.3**.**
Suppose Hypothesis 3.1 holds. There exists such that, if is a -connected matroid with at least elements, the following are equivalent:
- (1)
* is a near-regular matroid,* 2. (2)
* is a -matroid,* 3. (3)
* or is a matroid of rank that is a restriction of , and* 4. (4)
* is a ternary matroid that has no minor isomorphic to or .*
Moreover, suppose Hypothesis 3.2 holds. There exist such that, if is a simple, vertically -connected matroid with an -minor, then (1) and (2) are equivalent to each other and also to the following conditions:

* is a restriction of , and* 2. (4’)
* is a ternary matroid that has no minor isomorphic to .*
Theorem 1.3 leads to the following result.
Corollary 1.4**.**
Suppose Hypothesis 3.1 holds. There exists such that, if is a ternary -connected matroid with at least elements, then is representable over some field of characteristic other than if and only if is dyadic. Moreover, suppose Hypothesis 3.2 holds. There exist such that, if is a simple, ternary, vertically -connected matroid with an -minor, then is representable over some field of characteristic other than if and only if is dyadic.
Proof.
Whittle [22, Theorem 5.1] showed that a -connected ternary matroid that is representable over some field of characteristic other than is either a dyadic matroid or a -matroid. Therefore, since near-regular matroids are dyadic, Theorem 1.3 immediately implies the first statement in the corollary. The second statement is proved similarly but also requires the fact that a simple, vertically -connected matroid is -connected. ∎
Hypotheses 3.1 and 3.2 are believed to be true, but their proofs are still forthcoming in future papers by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle. They are modified versions of a hypothesis given by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle in [5]. The results announced in [5] rely on the Matroid Structure Theorem by these same authors [4]. We refer the reader to [9] for more details.
Some proofs in this paper involved case checks aided by Version 8.9 of the SageMath software system [18], in particular making use of the matroids component [17]. The authors used the CoCalc (formerly SageMathCloud) online interface.
In Section 2, we give some background information about the classes of matroids studied in this paper. In Section 3, we recall results from [7] that will be used to prove our main results. In Section 4, we prove Theorems 1.1 and 1.2, and in Section 5, we prove Theorem 1.3.
2. Preliminaries
We begin this section by clarifying some notation and terminology that will be used throughout the rest of the paper. Let be the matrix such that each column is distinct and such that every column has exactly two nonzero entries—the first a and the second . For a field , we denote by the prime subfield of . If is a class of matroids, we will denote by the closure of under the taking of minors. If is a vector in the vector space and is a subset of , let denote the projection of into . The support of is the subset of such that all entries of are nonzero and such that every entry of is [math]. The weight of a column or row vector of a matrix is its number of nonzero entries; that is, the weight of a vector is the size of its support. If is an matrix and , then we call an submatrix of a column submatrix of . All empty matrices (having [math] rows or [math] columns) are denoted by . In the remainder of this section, we give some background information about the classes of matroids studied in this paper.
The class of dyadic matroids consists of those matroids representable by a matrix over such that every nonzero subdeterminant is for some . The class of sixth-root-of-unity matroids (or -matroids) consists of those matroids that are representable by a matrix over such that every nonzero subdeterminant is a complex sixth root of unity. Let be the field obtained by extending the rationals by a transcendental . A matroid is near-regular if it can be represented by a matrix over such that every nonzero subdeterminant is contained in the set .
A matroid is signed-graphic if it can be represented by a matrix over each of whose columns has at most two nonzero entries. The rows and columns of this matrix can be indexed by the set of vertices and edges, respectively, of a signed graph. If the nonzero entries of the column are unequal, then the corresponding edge is a positive edge joining the vertices indexing the rows containing the nonzero entries. If the column has two equal entries, the edge is negative. If the column contains only one nonzero entry, then the corresponding edge is a negative loop at the vertex indexing the row containing the nonzero entry. Every signed-graphic matroid is dyadic. (See, for example, [23, Lemma 8A.3]).
Whittle [22, Theorem 1.4] showed that the following statements are equivalent for a matroid :

is near-regular

is representable over , , and

is representable over all fields except possibly .
He also showed [22, Theorem 1.2] that the class of -matroids consists exactly of those matroids representable over and and [22, Theorem 1.1] that the class of dyadic matroids consists exactly of those matroids representable over and . Thus, the class of near-regular matroids is the intersection of the classes of -matroids and dyadic matroids.
A geometric representation of is given in Figure 1.
It is fairly well known that is an excluded minor for the class of dyadic matroids. (See, for example, [15, Section 14.7].) We will use this fact in Section 4.
It is an open problem to determine the complete list of excluded minors for the dyadic matroids; however, the excluded minors for the classes of -matroids and near-regular matroids have been determined. Geelen, Gerards, and Kapoor [3, Corollary 1.4] showed that the excluded minors for the class of -matroids are , , , , , , and . (We refer the reader to [3] or [15] for the definitions of these matroids.) Hall, Mayhew, and Van Zwam [10, Theorem 1.2], based on unpublished work by Geelen, showed that the excluded minors for the class of near-regular matroids are , , , , , , , , , and . Here, is the result of performing a - operation on .
If , it follows from results of Kung [11, Theorem 1.1] and Kung and Oxley [12, Theorem 1.1] that the largest simple dyadic matroid of rank is the rank- ternary Dowling geometry, which is a signed-graphic matroid. Again, suppose . Then Oxley, Vertigan, and Whittle [16, Theorem 2.1, Corollary 2.2] showed that is the largest simple -matroid of rank and the largest simple near-regular matroid of rank . We remark without proof that our main results here, combined with [9, Lemmas 4.14, 4.16], show that Hypothesis 3.2 agrees with these known results.
3. Frame Templates
The notion of frame templates was introduced by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle in [5] to describe the structure of the highly connected members of minor-closed classes of matroids representable over a fixed finite field. Frame templates have been studied further in [8, 14, 9, 7]. In this section, we give several results proved in those papers that we will need to prove the main results in this paper. The results in [5] technically deal with represented matroids—which can be thought of as fixed representation matrices for matroids. However, since we only deal with ternary matroids in this paper, and since ternary matroids are uniquely -representable [1], we will state the results in terms of matroids rather than represented matroids.
A frame matrix is a matrix each of whose columns has at most two nonzero entries. If is a field, let denote the multiplicative group of , and let be a subgroup of . A -frame matrix is a frame matrix such that:

Each column of with a nonzero entry contains a 1.
- •
If a column of has a second nonzero entry, then that entry is for some .
If , then the vector matroid of a -frame matrix is a graphic matroid. For this reason, we will call the columns of a -frame matrix graphic columns.
A frame template over a field is a tuple such that the following hold:

is a subgroup of .
- (ii)
, , and are disjoint finite sets.
- (iii)

- (iv)
is a subgroup of the additive group of and is closed under scaling by elements of .
- (v)
is a subgroup of the additive group of and is closed under scaling by elements of .
Let be a frame template. Let and be finite sets, and let . We say that respects111For simplicity, we will use the terms respecting and conforming to mean what was called virtual respecting and virtual conforming in [8] and [7]. The distinction between conforming and virtual conforming is explained in [8]. We can do this since every matroid virtually conforming to a template is a minor of some matroid conforming to that template [8, Lemma 3.4]. if the following hold:

Let be an -representable matroid. We say that conforms1 to if there is a matrix conforming to such that is isomorphic to . We denote by the set of matroids that conform to . If conforms to a template , we say that coconforms to . We denote by the set of matroids that coconform to .
We now state the hypotheses on which the main results are based. As stated in Section 1, they are modified versions of a hypothesis given by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle in [5], and their proofs are forthcoming. In their current forms, these hypotheses were stated in [9].
Hypothesis 3.1** ([9, Hypothesis 4.3]).**
Let be a finite field, let be a positive integer, and let be a minor-closed class of -representable matroids. Then there exist and frame templates such that

* contains the duals of the matroids in each of the classes , and* 3. (3)
if is a simple -connected member of with at least elements and has no -minor, then either is a member of at least one of the classes , or is a member of at least one of the classes .
Hypothesis 3.2** ([9, Hypothesis 4.6]).**
Let be a finite field, let be a positive integer, and let be a minor-closed class of -representable matroids. Then there exist and frame templates such that

If and are frame templates, it is possible that even though and look very different.
Definition 3.3** ([7, Definition 6.3]).**
Let and be frame templates over a field , then the pair are strongly equivalent if . The pair are minor equivalent if .
There are other notions of template equivalence (namely equivalence, algebraic equivalence, and semi-strong equivalence) given in [7], but all of these imply minor equivalence.
If is a field and is a set, we say that two subgroups and of the additive subgroup of the vector space are skew if . If and , let . Nelson and Walsh [14] gave Definition 3.4 below.
Definition 3.4**.**
A frame template is reduced if there is a partition of such that

the rows of form a basis for a subspace whose additive group is skew to .
We will refer to the partition given in Definition 3.4 as the reduction partition of .
The following definition and theorem are found in [9].
Definition 3.5** ([9, Definition 5.3]).**
Let be a reduced frame template, with reduction partition . If spans the matroid , then is refined.
Theorem 3.6** ([9, Theorem 5.6]).**
If Hypothesis 3.1 holds for a class , then the constant and the templates can be chosen so that the templates are refined. Moreover, if Hypothesis 3.2 holds for a class , then the constants , and the templates can be chosen so that the templates are refined.
A few specific templates have been given names. We list some of those now, specifically for the ternary case. Note that is the class of signed-graphic matroids.

In all of the -templates studied in Sections 4 and 5, the matrix is an empty matrix. However, we use Definition 3.9 in order to stay consistent with [7].
The next lemma follows from [7, Lemmas 7.16–17].
Lemma 3.10**.**
Let be a frame template such that for each template . Then is strongly equivalent to a template with and with and both trivial.

Combining [7, Lemma 9.6], [7, Lemma 9.9], and [7, Lemma 9.14], we obtain the following.

The next lemma is an easy but useful result.
Lemma 3.20**.**
Let be a matrix with a submatrix . Every matroid conforming to is a minor of a matroid conforming to .
We use the next lemma to prove the excluded minor characterizations in Theorems 1.2 and 1.3; it is obtained by combining Lemmas 8.1 and 8.2 of [7].
Lemma 3.21**.**
Let be a minor-closed class of -representable matroids, where is the prime subfield of . Let and be two sets of -representable matroids such that

no member of is contained in ,

some member of is -representable,

for every refined frame template over such that , there is a member of that is a minor of a matroid conforming to , and

Suppose Hypothesis 3.1 holds; there exists such that a -connected -representable matroid with at least elements is contained in if and only if it contains no minor isomorphic to one of the matroids in the set .
Moreover, suppose Hypothesis 3.2 holds; there exist such that a vertically -connected -representable matroid with an -minor is contained in if and only if it contains no minor isomorphic to one of the matroids in .
The remaining lemmas in this section have not appeared previously, but they will be useful in Section 4. Recall from Definition 3.12 that every lifted template is refined and therefore reduced. Thus, a lifted template has a reduction partition as in Definition 3.4.
Lemma 3.22**.**
Let be a lifted template with reduction partition . Let , and let be any -frame matrix with rows. Then .

Finally, we have a lemma about refined templates.
Lemma 3.23**.**
Suppose is a refined template strongly equivalent to with and trivial and . Then is refined.
Proof.
Suppose for a contradiction that is not refined. Then the set does not span the matroid . Since for every matroid conforming to , this implies that every matroid conforming to has a cocircuit of size at most . Therefore, since and are strongly equivalent, every matroid conforming to has a cocircuit of size at most .
However, we will construct a matroid conforming to containing no such cocircuit. We construct a matrix respecting so that the -frame matrix is , where , and so that every vector chosen from and is the zero vector. In that case, contraction of has no effect on the -frame matrix. Since is refined, the set spans the matroid . Therefore, the vector matroid of the following matrix conforms to , where has columns indexed by , where has columns indexed by , and where has rows indexed by the elements of remaining after is contracted.

4. Dyadic Matroids
In this section, we characterize the highly connected dyadic matroids by proving Theorems 1.1 and 1.2. First, we will need to define the families of matroids , , and and to prove several lemmas that build on the machinery of Section 3.
Definition 4.1**.**
Let

For (respectively , ), we define (respectively , ) to be the rank- universal matroid for , where (respectively , ).
Consider the rank- ternary Dowling geometry . This matroid contains a restriction isomorphic to , with the signed-graphic representation given in Figure
2, with negative edges printed in bold. This representation of has been encountered before, for example in [24, 6, 21, 9]. The Dowling geometry can also be represented by the matrix , with the columns of representing the joints of the Dowling geometry.
By Lemma 3.18, the matroid is the generalized parallel connection of the complete graphic matroid with along a common restriction isomorphic to , where the restriction of has the signed-graphic representation given in Figure 2. (The restriction isomorphic to is a modular flat of , which is uniquely representable over any field. Therefore, this generalized parallel connection is well-defined.)
Lemma 4.2**.**
The matroids , , and are dyadic for every integer for which they are defined.
Proof.
First, we show that , , and are dyadic. This is true for because it is the ternary rank- Dowling geometry. Thus, it is signed-graphic and therefore dyadic. Let be either or . Consider the matrix but over rather than . The authors have checked, using SageMath that the vector matroid of this matrix is isomorphic to the vector matroid of the same matrix over . Thus, and are representable over both and and are both dyadic.
Now, Lemma 3.18 implies that (respectively , ) is the generalized parallel connection of , (respectively , ) and the complete graphic matroid along a common restriction isomorphic to (respectively , ). Since every complete graphic matroid is uniquely representable over every field, a result of Brylawski [2, Theorem 6.12] implies that , , and are representable over both and and therefore dyadic. (The reader familiar with partial fields may also apply [13, Theorem 3.1] to the dyadic partial field.) ∎
We remark that, for (respectively , ), the matroid , (respectively , ) is not signed-graphic; this can be easily checked by using SageMath to show that , (respectively , ) is not a restriction of the rank- (respectively , ) ternary Dowling geometry.
The next several lemmas will be used to determine the structure of a template such that

Lemma 4.4**.**
If is a refined ternary frame template such that , then either , or is a -template.
Proof.
By Lemmas 4.3 and 3.10, is strongly equivalent to a template with and with and both trivial. By Lemma 3.23, the template is refined. Then Lemma 3.13 implies that is minor equivalent to some lifted template .
If , then each matroid in is a minor of a signed-graphic matroid, since and are minor equivalent. Since the class of signed-graphic matroids is minor-closed, each matroid in is signed-graphic, implying that . If is a -template but , then is a -template by minor equivalence, Lemma 4.3, and Lemma 3.11. Thus, it suffices to prove the result for .
The only proper subgroup of the multiplicative group of is the trivial group . If is the trivial group , then is a -template. Thus, we may assume that is the entire multiplicative group of .
Since and is a lifted, for some matrix with indexing the columns of the identity matrix and indexing the columns of . Suppose that contains a column with at least three nonzero entries. Then by column scaling and permuting of rows, we may assume that contains either or as a submatrix. Call this submatrix , and let , where and index the rows and column of , respectively, and where , with indexing the columns of the identity matrix. It is not difficult to see that every matroid conforming to is a minor of some matroid conforming to , which is . Thus, is not a minor of any matroid conforming to .
However, if P{\color[rgb]{0,0,0}{}^{\prime}}=[1,1,-1]^{T}, then the representation of given in Matrix (4.1) is of the form , where is a -frame matrix. Thus, by Lemma 3.22, is a minor of a matroid conforming to . Similarly, if , we may take Matrix (4.1) and scale by the last row and the columns indexed by and . We see that can be represented by a matrix of the form , where is a -frame matrix. Again, Lemma 3.22 implies that is a minor of a matroid conforming to .
Therefore, we deduce that every column of has at most two nonzero entries, implying that every column of every matrix conforming to has at most two nonzero entries. Thus, consists entirely of signed-graphic matroids, and . ∎
Lemma 4.5**.**
Let be the complete, lifted -template determined by some matrix . If contains as a submatrix some matrix listed in Table 1 or 2, then .
Proof.
Let , where is some submatrix listed in Table 1 or 2. By Lemma 3.20, it suffices to show that is a minor of . For each of the matrices –, the authors used SageMath to show this. The computations are expedited by contracting some subset of and simplifying the resulting matroid before testing if is a minor. If is an matrix, then . Label the elements of , from left to right, as . If is the set to contract listed in Table 1 or 2 corresponding to the matrix , then the authors used SageMath to show that the simplification of contains as a minor. The code for an example computation is given in Appendix A. Using that code will ensure that the sets listed in Tables 1 and 2 are accurate, if one wishes to reproduce these calculations. ∎
By considering the matrix , one can see that scaling a column of one of the matrices listed in Table 1 or 2 results in another forbidden submatrix. This is because scaling a column of is the same as scaling a column of ; the vector matroid of the resulting matrix is equal to that of the original matrix. Similarly, permutation of rows or columns of can be extended to permutation of rows or columns of , resulting in a matrix with an equal vector matroid. Therefore, permutation of rows or columns of a matrix listed in Table 1 or 2 results in another forbidden matrix. However, scaling a row of results in a matrix that can no longer be written in that form. That is, if we scale a row, the resulting matrix no longer is of the form of Definition 3.17. Therefore, scaling a row of one of the matrices listed in Table 1 or 2 does not necessarily result in another forbidden matrix.

Lemma 4.7**.**
Let be a ternary matrix consisting entirely of unit columns, and let be a ternary matrix each of whose columns has exactly two nonzero entries, both of which are s. If is the complete, lifted -template determined by the following ternary matrix, then is contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids.

Definition 4.8**.**
A column of a ternary matrix is of type if it is of the form , up to permuting of rows. A column of a ternary matrix is of type if it is of the form , up to permuting of rows.
Lemma 4.9**.**
Let be a complete, lifted, ternary -template such that . Then is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by a ternary matrix each of whose columns can be scaled so that it is either a type- column or a type- column.
Proof.
By Lemma 3.19(i), we may assume that the sum of the rows of is the zero vector. By Lemma 3.15, we may assume that has no graphic columns. Since graphic columns are the only columns with weight at most whose entries sum to [math], every column of has at least three nonzero entries.
Now, by Lemma 3.19(ii), the complete, lifted -template determined by the matrix is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -templates determined by both and , which is the matrix from Table 1. Since is forbidden from being a submatrix of , so is by minor equivalence. Thus, no column of can contain four nonzero entries, at least three of which are equal. Therefore, by scaling columns of , we may assume that every column of is of the form or of the form , up to permuting rows. Thus, each column of is either of type or of type . ∎
Lemma 4.10**.**
Let be a ternary matrix all of whose columns are of type . Either , or all matroids in are signed-graphic.
Proof.
Suppose . By Lemma 4.5, the matrices , , and from Table 1 are not submatrices of . Therefore, the intersection of the supports of all of the columns of is nonempty. Therefore, Lemma 3.19(ii) implies that is minor equivalent to the template determined by the matrix obtained from by removing the row where every column has a nonzero entry. Every matrix conforming to has at most two nonzero entries per column. Therefore, every matroid conforming to the template is signed-graphic. ∎
Lemma 4.11**.**
Let be a ternary matrix with exactly two columns, one of type and one of type . Either , or the columns of can be scaled so that the resulting matrix is of one of the following forms, up to permuting of rows and columns and removal of rows all of whose entries are [math].

Suppose . Then all matrices listed in Tables 1 and 2 are forbidden from being submatrices of . Let be the matrix obtained by removing the row of with two nonzero entries. By Lemma 3.19(ii), the matrix is forbidden from being a submatrix of also.
If the columns of have supports with an intersection of size [math] or , then contains or , respectively, up to permuting rows and scaling columns. Since and are both forbidden matrices, the two columns of must have supports with an intersection of size at least . Since is a forbidden matrix, the result follows. ∎
Lemma 4.12**.**
Let be a ternary matrix with exactly two columns, both of type and neither a scalar multiple of the other. Either , or the columns of can be scaled so that the resulting matrix is of one of the following forms, up to permuting of rows and columns and removal of rows all of whose entries are [math].

Suppose . Then all matrices listed in Tables 1 and 2 are forbidden from being submatrices of . Let be the matrix obtained by removing the row of with two nonzero entries. By Lemma 3.19(ii), the matrix is forbidden from being a submatrix of also.
If the columns of have supports with an intersection of size [math] or , then contains or , respectively, up to scaling of columns and permuting of rows and columns. Since and are both forbidden matrices, the two columns of must have supports with an intersection of size at least . Moreover, since the matrices , , and are forbidden, the result follows. ∎

Lemma 4.13**.**
Let be a ternary matrix with at least three columns such that exactly one column is of type and all other columns are of type . Also, suppose that no column of is a scalar multiple of another. Proof.
Suppose . Then all matrices listed in Tables 1 and 2 are forbidden from being submatrices of . There are three cases to consider.

However, the presence of the second column in the matrix above, with the fact that is a forbidden matrix, imply that the column cannot be of the form . Therefore, by that lemma, all matroids in are signed-graphic. ∎
Lemma 4.14**.**
Let be a ternary matrix with at least three columns such that exactly two columns are of type and all other columns are of type . Also, suppose that no column of is a scalar multiple of another. Either , or all matroids in are signed-graphic.
Proof.
Suppose . Then all matrices listed in Tables 1 and 2 are forbidden from being submatrices of .
First, we show that the type- columns cannot have equal supports. Suppose otherwise; then Lemmas 4.11 and 4.12 imply that contains one of the following submatrices, up to scaling columns and permuting of rows and columns.

Let be a ternary matrix all of whose columns are of either type or type , with at least three type- columns. Also, suppose that no column of is a scalar multiple of another. Either , or all matroids in are signed-graphic, or is minor equivalent to or .
Proof.
Suppose . Then all matrices listed in Tables 1 and 2 are forbidden from being submatrices of . Let be the matrix obtained from by appending the row , and let be the matrix obtained from by appending the row . We consider the following cases.

The supports of every pair of type- columns intersect in a set of size . 2. (2)
There is a pair of type- columns whose supports intersect in a set of size , but no pair of type- columns have equal supports. 3. (3)
There is a pair of type- columns with equal supports.
In Case 1, Lemma 4.12 implies that contains the following submatrix, where the third column is part of a type- column of .

In Case 2, Lemma 4.12 implies that contains the following submatrix, where the third column is part of a type- column of .

Lemma 4.16**.**
Let be a refined ternary frame template with . One of the following holds:

Every member of is a signed-graphic matroid. 2. (2)
The simplification of each member of is a minor of for some . 3. (3)
The simplification of each member of is a minor of for some . 4. (4)
The simplification of each member of is a minor of for some .
Proof.
By Lemma 4.4, since is the class of signed-graphic matroids, we may assume that is a -template. Therefore, by Lemma 3.19(i), is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by a matrix the sum of whose rows is the zero vector. By Lemma 4.9, we may assume that every column of is either of type or of type .
Let be a column submatrix of obtained by removing all but one column from each set of columns of such that every column in the set is a scalar multiple of each of the other columns in the set. Because conditions (2), (3), and (4) deal with the simplifications of members of and because the class of signed-graphic matroids is closed under both parallel extensions and the taking of minors, it suffices to consider the template .
If has exactly one column, that column is of either type or type . Therefore, Lemma 4.7 implies that is contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids.
Suppose has exactly two columns. If at least one of those columns is of type , then Lemmas 4.10 and 4.11, combined with Lemma 4.7, show that is contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids. If both columns are of type , then Lemma 4.12 shows that there are three possibilities for . By Lemma 4.7, two of those possibilities result in being contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids. By Lemma 3.19(ii), the third possibility results in being minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by a submatrix of .
If has three or more columns, then Lemmas 4.10, 4.13, 4.14, and 4.15 imply that either is contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids or that is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by a submatrix of , , or .
If is contained in the class of signed-graphic matroids, then so is . If is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by a submatrix of , , or , then by definition of , , and , the simplification of each member of is a minor of for some , or for , or for some . This implies that condition (2), (3), or (4) holds for . ∎
We are now ready to prove Theorem 1.1.
Proof of Theorem 1.1.
We will prove the statement in Theorem 1.1 that is dependent on Hypothesis 3.1. The statement that is dependent on Hypothesis 3.2 is proved similarly.
Recall that is an excluded minor for the class of dyadic matroids. Since is a restriction of , Hypothesis 3.1, with and , implies that there exist and frame templates such that every -connected dyadic matroid with at least elements either is contained in one of or has a dual contained in one of . Moreover, each of is contained in the class of dyadic matroids.
Let be a -connected dyadic matroid with at least elements. We may assume ; therefore, and are both simple. Suppose neither nor is signed-graphic. We must show that either or is a matroid of some rank that is a restriction of , , or . We know that there is a template such that either , where or , where . In the former case, let ; in the latter case, let . By Theorem 3.6, we may assume that is refined. By Lemma 4.16, since is not signed-graphic, is a minor of , , or for some .
Now, we will show that is a restriction of , , or for some . Arguing inductively, it suffices to show that the following statements hold when is the simplification of a single-element contraction of :

Consider a universal matroid of some rank for the -template . It is the vector matroid of a matrix of the following form.

There are four cases to consider, depending on whether we contract an element of , , , or . Let .
If we contract an element of and simplify, we obtain the universal matroid of of rank . Therefore, is , , or and is , , or , respectively.
If we contract an element of and simplify, then the result is the universal matroid of a complete, lifted -template determined by a matrix obtained from by deleting one row and possibly removing any graphic or duplicate columns that may result. If is obtained from by deleting the last row, then , up to column scaling. This implies that and . In all other cases, one can use Lemma 3.19(ii) to show that is minor equivalent to for some matrix of the form given in Lemma 4.7, implying that is signed-graphic.
If we contract an element of and simplify, we obtain a universal matroid of a complete, lifted -template determined by a matrix obtained by adding one row of to another, deleting the added row, and possibly removing graphic or duplicate columns that may result. One can use Lemma 3.19(ii) to check that is minor equivalent to for some matrix such that either is of the form given in Lemma 4.7 (and therefore is signed-graphic) or . We have only when , so in this case, and .
If and we contract the element of represented by either the second or third column of , then we obtain a matroid represented by a matrix with at most two nonzero entries per column. In all other cases, if we contract an element of and simplify, then we obtain the universal matroid of a complete, lifted -template determined by some matrix . Using Lemma 3.19(ii), one can check that is minor equivalent to for some matrix of the form given in Lemma 4.7. Therefore, is signed-graphic. ∎
Now we prove Theorem 1.2.
Proof of Theorem 1.2.
We will use Lemma 3.21 to prove Theorem 1.2. Let , and let . Since is ternary but not dyadic, and since the class of dyadic matroids is closed under duality, conditions (i) and (ii) of Lemma 3.21 are satisfied. Since every signed-graphic matroid is dyadic and since , , and are dyadic for every , Lemma 4.16 implies that condition (iii) of Lemma 3.21 is satisfied. Then (iv) follows from (iii) and duality. The result follows. ∎
5. Near-Regular and -Matroids
In this section, we prove Theorem 1.3 after proving several lemmas.
Lemma 5.1**.**
Let . Then the non-Fano matroid is a minor of some member of . Therefore, is not contained in the class of -matroids.
Proof.
It is well known (see [15, Proposition 6.4.8]) that is -representable if and only if the characteristic of is not . Thus, is not representable over and is therefore not a -matroid. Therefore, the last statement of the lemma follows from the first part of the lemma.
We saw in Section 4 that can be obtained from the rank- ternary Dowling geometry by deleting the three joints. If we leave one of the joints in place, then it is contained in the closures of exactly two pairs of points that are not contained in a nontrivial line of . The result is the non-Fano matroid . Therefore, is signed-graphic, implying that .
The following ternary matrix is a representation of that conforms to both and .

Therefore, and . By Lemma 3.8, we also have that is a minor of some member of , some member of , and some member of . ∎
Recall that the matroid is obtained from the complete graphic matroid by adding a point freely to a triangle, contracting that point, and simplifying. For , Semple (see [20, Section 2] and [19, Proposition 3.1]) showed that is representable over a field if and only if . Therefore, is near-regular for every . The following matrix represents over every field of characteristic other than .

Lemma 5.2**.**
Let be the complete, lifted -template determined by some ternary matrix . Either is a minor of some matroid conforming to , or the simplification of each member of is a restriction of for some .
Proof.
Suppose that is not a minor of any matroid conforming to . We will show that the simplification of each member of is a restriction of for some .
By Lemma 3.15, we may assume that has no graphic columns. Suppose . Consider the vector matroid of . By contracting the element represented by , we obtain a matroid containing as a restriction. Therefore, no column of can contain four equal nonzero entries. If , then is (up to column scaling) the representation of given in Matrix (5.1). Therefore, if a column of contains unequal nonzero entries, then it can contain no other nonzero entry. Thus, the column is a graphic column, which contradicts our assumption above.
Thus, every column of contains at most three nonzero entries, all of which are equal. Consider the following matrices.

If is either of these matrices, then contains as a minor. (This can be easily checked with SageMath or by hand. If is the first matrix, contracting one of the elements represented by a column of and simplifying results in the rank- ternary Dowling geometry. We saw in the proof of Lemma 5.1 that is signed-graphic, implying that it is a restriction of the rank- ternary Dowling geometry. If is the second matrix, then is itself the rank- ternary Dowling geometry.) Therefore, does not contain either of these matrices as a submatrix.
It is routine to check that the class of matroids whose simplifications are restrictions of some is minor-closed. Therefore, it suffices to consider a template that is minor equivalent to . Thus, by Lemma 3.19(i), we may assume that the sum of the rows of is the zero vector. Therefore, we may assume that every column has exactly three nonzero entries all of which are equal. Because the two matrices above are forbidden, is of the following form, where consists entirely of unit columns.
Now, Lemma 3.19(ii) implies that is minor equivalent to the complete, lifted -template determined by the matrix obtained by removing the top row from . The simplification of each member of is a restriction of for some . ∎
We are now ready to prove Theorem 1.3.
Proof of Theorem 1.3.
We prove the statement in Theorem 1.3 that is dependent on Hypothesis 3.1. The statement dependent on Hypothesis 3.2 is proved similarly.
Every near-regular matroid is also a -matroid; therefore, (1) implies (2). We will now show that (2) implies (3). By Hypothesis 3.1, there exist ternary frame templates and a positive integer such that every matroid conforming to these templates is a -matroid and such that every simple -connected -matroid with at least elements either conforms or coconforms to one of these templates. By Theorem 3.6, we may assume that these templates are refined. Lemmas 5.1 and 3.11 imply that each of these templates is a -template. Then Lemmas 3.19 and 5.2 imply that the simplification of every matroid conforming to these templates is isomorphic to a restriction of for some (because the class of matroids whose simplifications are restrictions of is minor-closed). We see that we may choose because otherwise there are rows of the matrix representing that can be removed without changing the matroid. By taking , we see that (2) implies (3).
Since is near-regular for every , (3) implies (1). We complete the proof of the theorem by showing the equivalence of (2) and (4) using Lemma 3.21. In that lemma, let be the class of -matroids, let , and let . Since and are ternary matroids that are not -matroids, conditions (i) and (ii) of Lemma 3.21 are satisfied. Combining Lemmas 5.1 and 3.11, we see that for every refined frame template that is not a -template, . Combining Lemmas 3.19(i), and 5.2, we see that for every -template such that is not contained in the class of matroids whose simplifications are restrictions of some . Since is a -matroid for every , condition (iii) of Lemma 3.21 holds. Finally, condition (iv) of Lemma 3.21 holds because of condition (iii) and the fact that the class of -matroids is closed under duality. Therefore, by Lemma 3.21, there is a positive integer such that a -connected ternary matroid with at least elements is a -matroid if and only if it contains no minor isomorphic to either or . By taking , we see that (2) is equivalent to (4), completing the proof. ∎
Appendix A. SageMath Code
