## TL;DR

This paper introduces the Plasma Cascade Instability, a new micro-bunching phenomenon in charged particle beams, supported by theoretical analysis, simulations, and experimental observations.

## Contribution

It presents the first comprehensive study of the Plasma Cascade Instability, combining theory, simulations, and experiments to characterize this new micro-bunching effect.

## Key findings

- Identification of the Plasma Cascade Instability in charged particle beams
- Theoretical framework describing the instability dynamics
- Experimental validation of the instability occurrence

## Abstract

In this letter we describe a new micro-bunching instability occurring in charged particle beams propagating along a straight trajectory: based on the dynamics we named it a Plasma Cascade Instability.
