## TL;DR

This paper reviews the formalism of dynamical maps for open quantum systems, discussing their representations and properties, with examples, to aid understanding of quantum channels in various applications.

## Contribution

It provides a comprehensive overview of dynamical maps and quantum channels, highlighting their representations and properties with illustrative examples.

## Key findings

- Clarifies different representations of quantum channels
- Highlights properties essential for quantum information processing
- Provides examples to illustrate formalism

## Abstract

Open quantum systems have become an active area of research, owing to its potential applications in many different fields ranging from computation to biology. Here, we review the formalism of dynamical maps used to represent the time evolution of open quantum systems and discuss the various representations and properties of the same, with many examples.
