Quantum Gravity and background field formalism
Peter M. Lavrov

TL;DR
This paper investigates the invariance properties of quantum gravity theories within the background field formalism, revealing that the background effective action lacks general covariance under certain gauge choices.
Contribution
It demonstrates that the background effective action in quantum gravity is not invariant under general coordinate transformations in non-linear gauges.
Findings
Background effective action is not invariant under general coordinate transformations.
Invariance issues depend on the choice of gauge fixing.
Results impact the understanding of gauge invariance in quantum gravity.
Abstract
We analyze the problem of general covariance for quantum gravity theories in the background field formalism with respect to gauge fixing procedure. We prove that the background effective action is not invariant under general coordinate transformations of background metric tensor in non-linear gauges.
