TL;DR
This paper uses Gaia DR2 data to accurately determine the distance to the Pleiades cluster, resolving previous discrepancies from Hipparcos and other methods, and is accessible to non-specialists.
Contribution
It provides a definitive Gaia-based distance measurement to the Pleiades, settling longstanding debates in stellar distance estimations.
Findings
Gaia DR2 data confirms the Pleiades distance with high precision.
The Gaia measurement resolves previous discrepancies from Hipparcos.
The presentation is accessible for interested laypersons.
Abstract
We present a calculation of the distance to the Pleiades star cluster based on data from Gaia DR2. We show that Gaia finally settles the discrepancy between the values derived from Hipparcos and other distance determinations. The technical level of the presentation is adequate for the interested layperson.
