TL;DR
This study used deep near-IR images from the VVV Survey to identify and analyze 960 RR Lyrae ab stars near the Galactic Centre, revealing their properties, distribution, and kinematics, and suggesting a dissipational collapse formation scenario.
Contribution
First comprehensive analysis of RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic Centre region using VVV Survey data, including their distribution, metallicity, and kinematic properties.
Findings
Identified 960 RRab stars within 100' of the Galactic Centre.
Found a mean period of 0.5446 days and metallicity of -1.30 dex.
RRab population shows high velocity dispersions and negligible rotation.
Abstract
Deep near-IR images from the VVV Survey were used to search for RR Lyrae type ab (RRab) stars within 100' from the Galactic Centre (GC). A sample of 960 RRab stars were discovered. We use the reddening-corrected magnitudes in order to isolate RRab belonging to the GC. The mean period for our RRab sample is days, yielding a mean metallicity of dex and a median distance from the Sun of . We measure the RRab surface density using the less reddened region sampled here, finding RRab/sq deg at a projected Galactocentric distance deg. This implies a large total mass () for the old and metal-poor population contained inside . We measure accurate relative proper motions, from which we derive tangential velocity dispersions of and km/s along the Galactic longitude and latitude…
