Production of $\Lambda_c$ baryons at the LHC within the $k_T$-factorization approach and independent parton fragmentation picture
Rafal Maciula, Antoni Szczurek

TL;DR
This paper models $ ext{Lambda}_c$ baryon production at the LHC using $k_T$-factorization and independent fragmentation, finding challenges in explaining recent experimental data within this framework.
Contribution
It applies the $k_T$-factorization approach with modern gluon distributions to charm production and critically examines the independent fragmentation model for $ ext{Lambda}_c$ baryons against LHC data.
Findings
The model describes $D$ meson data well.
The $ ext{Lambda}_c$ fragmentation fraction needed is larger than in $e^+e^-$ or $ep$ experiments.
Independent fragmentation struggles to explain $ ext{Lambda}_c$ production data.
Abstract
We calculate cross section for production of mesons and baryons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for production of pairs is calculated within -factorization approach with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated gluon distributions obtained on the basis of modern collinear gluon distribution functions. We show that our approach well describes the , and experimental data. We try to understand recent ALICE and LHCb data for production with the independent parton fragmentation approach. The Peterson fragmentation functions are used. The fragmentation fraction and parameter for are varied. As a control plot we show transverse momentum distribution of different species of mesons assuming standard values of the $f_{c \to…
