Enhanced axion-photon coupling in GUT with hidden photon
Ryuji Daido, Fuminobu Takahashi, Norimi Yokozaki

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that in GUT models with a hidden U(1) gauge symmetry and significant kinetic mixing, the axion-photon coupling can be substantially enhanced, potentially improving axion detection prospects.
Contribution
It introduces a simple GUT framework with large kinetic mixing that significantly boosts the axion-photon coupling, a novel mechanism not previously emphasized.
Findings
Axion-photon coupling can be enhanced by 10-100 times.
Large kinetic mixing is essential for the enhancement.
Hidden matter fields contribute significantly to the electromagnetic anomaly.
Abstract
We show that the axion coupling to photons can be enhanced in simple models with a single Peccei-Quinn field, if the gauge coupling unification is realized by a large kinetic mixing between hypercharge and unbroken hidden U(1). The key observation is that the U(1) gauge coupling should be rather strong to induce such large kinetic mixing, leading to enhanced contributions of hidden matter fields to the electromagnetic anomaly. We find that the axion-photon coupling is enhanced by about a factor of 10-100 with respect to the GUT-axion models with .
