TL;DR
This study performs a non-LTE abundance analysis of two extreme helium stars, V652 Her and HD 144941, revealing their atmospheric parameters and compositions, and supporting the white dwarf merger origin hypothesis.
Contribution
It provides the first consistent non-LTE atmospheric parameters and detailed elemental abundances for these stars, confirming merger models and highlighting the importance of non-LTE effects.
Findings
Non-LTE analysis yields consistent atmospheric parameters.
Neon abundance significantly affected by non-LTE effects.
V652 Her's composition matches slow helium white dwarf merger predictions.
Abstract
Optical high-resolution spectra of V652 Her and HD 144941, the two extreme helium stars with exceptionally low C/He ratios, have been subjected to a non-LTE abundance analysis using the tools TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. Defining atmospheric parameters were obtained from a grid of non-LTE atmospheres and a variety of spectroscopic indicators including He I and He II line profiles, ionization equilibrium of ion pairs such as C II/C III and N II/N III. The various indicators provide a consistent set of atmospheric parameters: =25000300K, = 3.100.12(cgs), and are provided for V652 Her, and =22000600K, = 3.450.15 (cgs), and are provided for HD 144941. In contrast to the non-LTE analyses, the LTE analyses - LTE atmospheres and a LTE line analysis - with the available indicators do…
