TL;DR
This paper reports the discovery of superconductivity in Ba-filled iridium skutterudites BaxIr4X12 (X=As, P), showing that Ba filling induces a nonmetal-to-metal transition and results in BCS-type superconductivity with transition temperatures up to 5.6 K.
Contribution
It introduces new superconducting materials BaxIr4X12 with detailed analysis of their electronic properties and transition temperatures, expanding the family of skutterudite superconductors.
Findings
Ba filling induces a nonmetal-to-metal transition.
Superconducting transition temperatures up to 5.6 K.
Superconductivity classified as BCS-type with intermediate coupling.
Abstract
We report superconductive iridium pnictides BaxIr4X12 (X = As and P) with a filled skutterudite structure, demonstrating that Ba filling dramatically alters their electronic properties and induces a nonmetal-to-metal transition with increasing the Ba content x. The highest superconducting transition temperatures are 4.8 and 5.6 K observed for BaxIr4As12 and BaxIr4P12, respectively. The superconductivity in BaxIr4X12 can classified into the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type with intermediate coupling.
