TL;DR
This paper reports the search for the exotic charmonium state X(3872) in muon-induced reactions at COMPASS, observing a signal consistent with X(3872) and indicating a possible new state, potentially a neutral partner predicted by tetraquark models.
Contribution
First experimental search for muoproduction of X(3872) at COMPASS, revealing a potential new charmonium state and providing cross section measurements.
Findings
Observed a 4.1 sigma signal consistent with X(3872)
Detected a shape disagreement in the $\pi^+\pi^-$ mass distribution compared to previous observations
Indication of a possible new neutral charmonium state
Abstract
We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/ and 200 GeV/ momentum. In the mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 . Its mass and width are consistent with those of the . The shape of the mass distribution from the observed decay into shows disagreement with previous observations for . The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of with predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into is determined to…
