Abstract.
In this paper, we reconsider the large- asymptotic expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function . New representations for the remainder term of the asymptotic expansion are found and used to obtain sharp and realistic error bounds. Applications to the asymptotic expansions of the polygamma functions, the gamma function, the Barnes -function and the -derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function are provided. A detailed discussion on the sharpness of our error bounds is also given.

1. Introduction and main results
In the present paper, we reconsider the large- asymptotic expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function which is defined for complex and by the series expansion

when and . The Hurwitz zeta function has a meromorphic continuation in the -plane with a simple pole of residue at . The Riemann zeta function is a special case since and . As a function of , with () fixed, is analytic in the domain and (in general) possesses branch-point singularities at non-positive integer values of .
It is well known that, as in the sector , with () and being fixed, the Hurwitz zeta function has the asymptotic expansion

where the ’s denote the even-order Bernoulli numbers and is the so-called Pochhammer symbol (see, e.g., [14, p. 25] or [17, eq. 25.11.43]). In the special case that is a large positive integer, (1.1) can be regarded as an asymptotic expansion for the tail of the Dirichlet series expansion of the Riemann zeta function , because

In this special case, formula (1.1) is most likely due to Euler (see, e.g., [7, Chapter 6]), who used it to compute the numerical values of for . Gram [8] combined (1.1) and (1.2) to evaluate numerically the first several zeros of the Riemann zeta function in the critical strip . A refinement of Gram’s analysis was provided by Backlund [2], who also gave precise bounds for the remainder term of the asymptotic expansion (1.1) in the case that is a positive integer. Recently, Johannson [10] gave a numerical treatment of based on the asymptotic expansion (1.1).
The main aim of the present paper is to derive new representations and bounds for the remainder of the asymptotic expansion (1.1). Thus, for , and any positive integer , we define the th remainder term of the asymptotic expansion (1.1) via the equality

Throughout this paper, if not stated otherwise, empty sums are taken to be zero. The derivations of the estimates for are based on new representations of this remainder term. Before stating the main results in detail, we introduce some notation. We denote

The function was originally introduced by Dingle [5, pp. 407] and, following his convention, we refer to it as a basic terminant (but note that Dingle’s notation slightly differs from ours, e.g., is used for our ). The basic terminant is a multivalued function of its argument and, when the argument is fixed, is an entire function of its order . We shall also use the concept of the polylogarithm function which is defined by the power series expansion

Our derivation of (1.5) is based on the integral representation (1.4). Alternatively, formula (1.5) can be deduced from the more general expansion (1.11) of Paris or from an analogous result about the Lerch zeta function by Katsurada [11, Theorem 1].
The subsequent theorem provides bounds for the remainder . The error bound (1.7) may be further simplified by employing the various estimates for given in Appendix A.

We remark that the special case of this theorem when is a positive integer is known and it appears, for example, in [18, exer. 3.2, p. 292].
We would like to emphasize that the requirement in the above theorems is not a serious restriction. Indeed, the index of the numerically least term of the asymptotic expansion (1.1) is . Therefore, it is reasonable to choose the optimal , whereas the condition has to be fulfilled in order to obtain proper approximations from (1.3).
Paris [19] studied in detail the Stokes phenomenon associated with the asymptotic expansion of by establishing an exponentially improved extension of (1.1). In particular, he proved that if is an arbitrary sequence of positive integers and is any complex number such that and for each , then the Hurwitz zeta function has the exact expansion

as long as . Paris’ proof of (1.11) uses techniques based on Mellin–Barnes integrals. We will give an alternative proof of his result in Section 2. Note that in his paper, Paris uses a notation of the basic terminant which is different from ours. Applying Stirling’s formula and Proposition A.4, it can readily be shown that if the ’s are chosen so that , as , then the infinite series involving the basic terminants converges very rapidly in the closed sector , with its th term behaving like .
The remaining part of the paper is structured as follows. In Section 2, we prove the representations for the remainder term stated in Theorem 1.1 and the convergent expansion (1.11). In Section 3, we prove the error bounds given in Theorems 1.2 and 1.3. Section 4 provides applications of our results to the asymptotic expansions of the polygamma functions, the gamma function, the Barnes -function and the -derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function . The paper concludes with a discussion in Section 5.
2. Proof of the representations for the remainder term
In this section, we prove the representations for the remainder stated in Theorem 1.1 and the convergent expansion (1.11).
We begin by deriving formula (1.4). It is known that the remainder term may be expressed in the form

3. Proof of the error bounds
In this section, we prove the bounds for the remainder term given in Theorems 1.2 and 1.3.
We begin with the proof of the bound (1.7). Suppose that is a positive integer and is an arbitrary complex number such that and . From (1.5) we infer that

4. Application to related functions
In this section, we show how the remainder terms of the known asymptotic expansions of the polygamma functions, the gamma function, the Barnes -function and the -derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function may be expressed in terms of the remainder . Thus, the theorems in Section 1 can be applied to obtain representations and bounds for the error terms of these asymptotic expansions. Some of the resulting representations and bounds are well-known in the literature but many of them, we believe, are new.
The asymptotic expansion of the digamma function may be written

The standard asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the gamma function takes the form

The asymptotic expansion (4.3) is usually attributed to Stirling however, it was first discovered by De Moivre (for a detailed historical account, see [1, pp. 482–483]). A combination of (4.4) and (1.8), for example, reproduces Stieltjes’ error bound for the asymptotic expansion of (cf. [17, §5.11(ii)] or [18, eq. (4.06), p. 294]). Other known estimates for including those of Lindelöf [12], F. W. Schäfke and A. Sattler [20], and Guariĭ [9] can all be deduced as direct consequences of (4.4), (1.7) and the bounds given in Appendix A.
The -function, introduced and studied originally by Barnes [3], has the asymptotic expansions

Explicit expressions and bounds for the remainder term were given recently by the present author [15]. The results of the paper [15] are special cases or consequences of the relation (4.8) and Theorems 1.1–1.3.
Elizalde [6] studied the large- asymptotic behaviour of the -derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function evaluated at negative integer values of . In particular, he showed that

5. Discussion
In this paper, we have derived new representations and estimates for the remainder term of the asymptotic expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function. In this section, we shall discuss the sharpness of our error bounds.
First, we consider the bound (1.7) with being real. In particular, the asymptotic expansions discussed in Section 4 belong to this case. Let be any non-negative integer, a real number and a complex number. Suppose that , and . Under these assumptions, it follows from Theorem 1.2 and Propositions A.1, A.4 and A.5 that

By the definition of an asymptotic expansion, for any fixed . Therefore, when , the estimate (5.1) and hence our error bound (1.7) cannot be improved in general.
Consider now the case when . The bound (5.1) is reasonably sharp as long as is not very large, i.e., when is bounded away from . As approaches , the factor grows indefinitely and therefore it has to be replaced by . By Stirling’s formula,

as , and therefore the appearance of this factor in the bound (5.1) may give the impression that this estimate is unrealistic for large . However, this is not the case, as the following argument shows. We assume that is fixed, is bounded, and is large. The saddle point method applied to (A.11) shows that when and is bounded, the asymptotics

hold as . Combining the estimates (5.2)–(5.3) with the representation (1.5) yields

Consequently, when is equal or smaller but close to , the estimate (5.1) and thus the error bound (1.7) cannot be improved in general.
Finally, assume that . Elementary analysis shows that the factor

as a function of , remains bounded, provided that . This gives a reasonable estimate for the remainder term . Otherwise, can take very small values when is large, making the bound (5.1) completely unrealistic in most of the sectors . This deficiency of the bound (5.1) (and (1.7)) is necessary and is due to the omission of certain exponentially small terms arising from the Stokes phenomenon related to the asymptotic expansion (1.1) of the Hurwitz zeta function (for a detailed discussion, see [19]). Thus, the use of the asymptotic expansion (1.1) should be confined to the sector . For other ranges of , one should use the analytic continuation formulae

Let us now turn our attention to the case when is allowed to be complex in (1.7). Let be a positive integer and let and be complex numbers such that , and . Under these assumptions, it follows from Theorem 1.2 and Propositions A.1 that

Now, we make the assumptions that and as . With these provisos, it can easily be shown, using for example Stirling’s formula, that the quotient of gamma functions in (5.5) is asymptotically for large . Consequently, if is large, the estimates (5.5) and (1.7) are reasonably sharp in most of the sector . If the assumption is replaced by the weaker condition , the quotient in (5.5) is still bounded and hence, the estimates (5.5) and (1.7) are still relatively sharp. Otherwise, if is small and is much larger than , this quotient may grow exponentially fast in , which can make the bound (5.5) completely unrealistic. Therefore, if the asymptotic expansion (1.1) is truncated just before its numerically least term, i.e., when , the estimate (5.5) is reasonable in most of the sector as long as . Although (1.1) is valid in the sense of generalised asymptotic expansions [17, §2.1(v)] provided , the stronger assumption guarantees the rapid decay of the first several terms of (1.1) for large .
When is equal or smaller but close to , the estimate (5.5) may be replaced by

which can be derived from Theorem 1.2 and Proposition A.4. If satisfies the requirements posed in the previous paragraph and is non-negative, the factor in the second line of (5.6) is for large . By an argument similar to that used in the case of real , it follows that (5.6) is a realistic bound. Otherwise, if is small and is much larger than or is negative and large, the right-hand side of the inequality (5.6) may be a serious overestimate of the actual error.
Similarly to the case of real , for values of outside the closed sector , one should make use of the continuation formulae (5.4).
We continue by discussing the bound (1.9). Let be a positive integer, a real number and a complex number. Suppose that , and . Under these requirements, the bound (1.9) takes the form

It is easy to see that the right-hand side is always larger than the right-hand side of the inequality (5.1). Hence, the estimate (5.1) (and thus the error bound (1.7)) is superior over (1.9). However, for complex values of with , the bound (1.9) can be sharper than (5.5) and (5.6) since it does not involve the gamma function ratio which grows exponentially fast in .
We conclude this section with a brief discussion of the error bound (1.8). With the same assumptions as those for the estimate (5.1), the bound (1.8) simplifies to

It is seen that, in general, this bound is weaker than that given in (5.1) and hence it is mainly of theoretical interest. In the case that is complex, the estimate (1.8) is reasonably sharp as long as is non-negative and is small.
