As it is known ([7]), in algebraic geometry one can define connections, differential operators etc. without ever mentioning derivatives or any kind of limiting procedure. One only needs to have the notion of infinitesimal neighbourhoods given by nilpotent elements.
Looking at what happens when one contracts such neighbourhoods, one arrives at objects that have some prescribed behaviour along these contractions. The results of contractions are usually called de Rham spaces, and the objects that live on them are called crystals. Choosing to work with linear objects (i.e. sheaves of modules) one arrives at D-modules and linear differential operators (see e.g. [8]).
This technique can be applied also to differential geometry, once we use the theory of C∞-rings to take an algebraic-geometric approach (e.g. [12]). However, C∞-rings are much more than just commutative R-algebras, and there is more than one way to define crystals in differential geometry because there is more than one notion of nilpotence.
It was observed in [11] that apart from the usual nilpotent elements, C∞-rings can have ∞-nilpotent ones, which are defined as follows: a∈A is ∞-nilpotent, if the C∞-ring A{a−1} obtained by inverting a is [math]. Here it is important that this inverting happens in the category of C∞-rings. For example x∈C∞(R)/(e−x21) is ∞-nilpotent, but not nilpotent. Clearly every nilpotent element is also ∞-nilpotent.
Using the usual notion of nilpotence one gets de Rham spaces that can be described as quotients by actions of formal neighbourhoods of the diagonals. This is true in both algebraic and differential geometry. In the differential-geometric literature, however, one usually talks about jet bundles, instead of the formal neighbourhood of the diagonal and sheaves of modules over such neighbourhoods. The difference is in name only.
Something completely different happens when we apply de Rham space formalism to contracting ∞-nilpotent neighbourhoods. Instead of quotients by actions of formal neighbourhoods of diagonals we get quotients by actions of germs of diagonals. As in the formal case, these C∞-rings of germs carry a linear topology given by order of vanishing at the diagonal. Since in differential geometry there are many more orders of vanishing than just the finite ones, the infinitesimal theory we get here is much richer.
An immediate benefit of this richer theory is having many more differential operators, than just the polynomial ones. Another consequence becomes apparent when we consider the opposite procedure – summation. Instead of the usual Taylor series, that characterize behavior of functions in relation to algebraic monomials, we need to work with functions having arbitrary vanishing properties, i.e. we need to go to trans-series (e.g. [14]) and beyond.
Consider the deformation theory one gets from this: in addition to specifying behavior of functors with respect to nilpotent extensions, we should consider also ∞-nilpotent extensions. Since all ∞-nilpotent extensions add up to germs, the deformation theory necessarily goes beyond perturbations. In turn this leads to a completely new definition of derived geometry. Differential graded manifolds or simplicial C∞-rings will not suffice anymore, since decomposition according to degree/simplicial dimension reflects decomposition according to finite orders of vanishing.
The present paper is the first in a series examining this rich infinitesimal theory and possibly some of its applications.
Here is the contents of the paper:
In Section 2.1 we consider 6 different radicals of ideals in C∞-rings. Three of them are well known in commutative algebra (nilradical, Jacobson radical, and intersection of all maximal ideals having R as the residue field), while another two come from considering different Grothendieck topologies on the category of C∞-spaces. The main actor of this paper – the ∞-radical – is specific to the C∞-algebra.
In Section 2.2 we prove that just as nilradical satisfies the strong functoriality property, so does the ∞-radical. We give proofs for some useful facts relating to algebra of these radicals, preparing the ground for de Rham spaces.
Before we can define de Rham spaces for both nilpotent and ∞-reductions we introduce regularity conditions in terms of injectivity with respect to the reduction functors. This is done in Section 3.1.
Then in Section 3.2 we define the two kinds of de Rham spaces. Here we also prove the central result that these de Rham spaces can be built using certain neighbourhoods of the diagonals. The main ingredient in the proof is the strong functoriality from Section 2.2.
Section 3.3 is dedicated to presenting these neighbourhoods of the diagonals as spectra of C∞-rings equipped with linear topologies. In the nilpotent case these spectra are just the usual formal neighbourhoods, while in the ∞-case they are the germs of diagonals.
De Rham groupoids appear in Section 3.4. We show in particular that both in the nilpotent and the ∞- cases the de Rham spaces we construct are weakly equivalent (as simplicial sheaves) to the nerves of the corresponding de Rham groupoids. We show that often (e.g. for all manifolds) these nerves consist of the formal neighbourhoods and respectively of the germs of diagonals in all cartesian powers.
Finally in Section 4 we look at the differential operators one obtains from ∞- de Rham groupoids. We postpone a detailed analysis to another paper, but we do show that these operators go beyond perturbation, i.e. they provide infinitesimal description of deformations of the identity morphism on a manifold whose infinite jets at the identity vanish.

2 Radicals and reductions in C∞-algebra
Let C∞R be the category of C∞-rings, we denote by C∞Rfg⊂C∞R the full subcategory of finitely generated C∞-rings. By definition (e.g. [12] §I.1) C∞R is the category of product preserving functors R∞→Set, where R∞ is the algebraic theory of C∞-rings, i.e. it is the category having {Rn}n∈Z≥0 as objects and C∞-maps as morphisms. Objects of C∞Rfg are quotients of {C∞(Rn)}n≥0 by ideals ([12], §I.5).
Geometric constructions are usually performed in C∞Rfg (e.g. [12]), with infinitely generated C∞-rings recovered as Ind-objects in C∞Rfg. However, sometimes it is necessary to consider infinitely generated C∞-rings directly. For example, there are many ideals in C∞(Rn), that are not finitely generated, consequently simplicial resolutions of C∞-rings often have components that are not finitely generated. This becomes important, for example, in [6]. In this paper we try to work in all of C∞R, and switch to C∞Rfg only when necessary.
The category C∞R is both complete and co-complete (e.g. [1] Cor. 1.22, Thm. 4.5). We denote the coproduct in this category by ⊗. For a C∞-ring A we denote by Spec(A) the corresponding object in the opposite category C∞Rop. And given X∈C∞Rop we write C∞(X) for the corresponding object of C∞R. For an arbitrary X∈C∞Rop we denote by X the representable pre-sheaf homC∞Rop(−,X):C∞Rop→Set.
2.1 Six radicals
Let A∈C∞R be a C∞-ring, as R∞ contains the theory Ralg of commutative, associative, unital R-algebras, every R∞-congruence on A is given by an ideal of the underlying commutative R-algebra. The converse is also true (e.g. [12], prop. I.1.2) and we can identify R∞-congruences with ideals. There are several notions of radical ideals in this context, we consider 6 of them.

The nilradical, Jacobson and R-Jacobson radicals are borrowings from commutative algebra. The R-jet and R-germ radicals appear in defining various Grothendieck topologies on C∞Rfgop (e.g. [12] §III) and natural topologies on C∞-rings ([4]). We will be mostly concerned with the ∞-radical, that was introduced in [11] §2. First we need to compare these radicals.
Proposition 1**.**
For any A, A as above there is a sequence of inclusions

Proof.
The only inclusion that is not obvious is ∞A⊆JA. Let α∈A, and suppose there is m∈M(A), s.t. α∈/m. Then [α]∈A/m is invertible, and hence (A/A){α−1} cannot be trivial, i.e. α∈/∞A.
In the following examples we put A:=C∞(R).
Let m0∞⊂C∞(R) consist of functions having [math]-jet at 0∈R. Then C∞(R)/m0∞≅R[[x]] (Borel lemma), and hence nilm0∞=m0∞. On the other hand the filter {V⊆R∣∃f∈m0∞,V={p∣f(p)=0}} coincides with the filter of closed subsets of R containing [math]. Therefore from Lemma 2.2 in [11] we conclude that ∞m0∞=m0, the ideal of functions vanishing at [math]. So nilm0∞⊊∞m0∞.

Let m0g⊂C∞(R) consist of functions having [math]-germ at 0∈R. According to [11], page 329 the ring C∞(R)/m0g is local, and hence Jm0g=m0. On the other hand, using Lemma 2.2 from [11] we see that ∞m0g=m0g. So ∞m0g⊊Jm0g.

Let Acs⊂C∞(R) consist of functions having compact support. Clearly this is a proper ideal of C∞(R), and hence JAcs=C∞(R). It is also clear that MR(Acs)=∅, i.e. RJAcs=C∞(R). So JAcs⊊RJAcs.

The other two radicals do not fit in this chain of inclusions. It is clear that we always have gA⊆jA⊆RJA, and these inclusions can be strict (e.g. applied to m0g⊂C∞(R)). The following examples show that this is the most we can say in the general situation.
Example 1**.**
Consider (x2)⊂C∞(R). Clearly nil(x2)=m0, while j(x2)=(x2). Thus j(x2)⊊nil(x2).
Consider again the ideal Acs⊂C∞(R) of functions with compact support. It is easy to see that gAcs=C∞(R), while as before JAcs=C∞(R). Thus JAcs⊊gAcs.
In summary we have the following relationship between the six radicals where each inclusion can be strict:

We finish this section with a useful characterization of ∞- radicals. Lemma 2.2 in [11] gives an alternative to the definition: for any (finite or infinite) set Sf∈∞A≤C∞(RS), iff ∃g∈A, s.t. f and g have the same sets of zeroes in RS. In addition to this reformulation we would like to have a generalization of the nilpotence condition. For any C∞-ring A consider the C∞-ring A⊗C∞(R) obtained by freely adjoining a variable x. Let A∈C∞R, an element g∈A is ∞-nilpotent, if there is f∈A⊗C∞(R), s.t. f(g)=0 and f becomes invertible in A⊗C∞(R∖{0}).
This notion has an obvious extension to non-trivial ideals: let A≤A be any ideal, g∈A* is ∞-nilpotent relative to A*, if there is f∈A⊗C∞(R), s.t. f(g)∈A and f becomes invertible in (A/A)⊗C∞(R∖{0}). However, it brings nothing new: let A:=A/A, denote the projection ϕ:A→A, we have a commutative diagram in C∞Rop:

where Φ corresponds to ϕ. Then g is ∞-nilpotent relative to A, if f∘Γg∘Φ=0. Since ϕ is surjective and C∞(R) is free, it is clear that this notion is equivalent to ∞-nilpotence of ϕ(g) in A.
One can say that for such g the “degree of nilpotence” is at mostf, meaning the rate of vanishing of f at Spec(A). Notice that this “degree of nilpotence” is not only possibly infinite, but can also vary on Spec(A).

2.2 Three reductions
To define reductions we need to investigate functoriality properties of the radicals. We start with the following elementary lemma.

The nilradical of A is the intersection of prime ideals containing A, and pre-images of prime-ideals are again prime ideals.
Maximal ideals with residue field R are kernels of surjective maps onto R, and any C∞-morphism to R is surjective (elements of R are the structure constants of the theory of C∞-rings). Therefore pre-images of maximal ideals with residue field R are again such ideals.
According to [11] page 329, α∈∞A1, iff ∃β∈A1, s.t. β becomes invertible in A1{α−1}. Then ϕ(β)∈A2, and we conclude that ϕ(α)∈∞A2.∎
In fact, for the nilradical and ∞- radical a much stronger result is true.
Proposition 3**.**
Let ϕ:A1→A2 be a morphism in C∞R. Then

The case of ∞-radical. Let {ai}i∈I be a set of generators of A1 as a C∞-ring, and let {bj}j∈J be a set of generators of A2 obtained by enlarging {ϕ(ai)}i∈I. Let ψ:C∞(RI)↪C∞(RJ) be the C∞-morphism corresponding to Ψ:RJ→RI given by I⊆J.111We say f∈C∞(Rn), if f factors into a projection RI→Rk and a smooth Rk→R. Clearly ϕ, ψ make up a commutative diagram with the projections π1:C∞(RI)→A1, π2:C∞(RJ)→A2.
We claim it is enough to prove the proposition for ψ. Indeed, from Lemma 2 we know that ∞Ker(ϕ)≤ϕ−1(∞0). This inclusion is an equality, iff π1−1(∞Ker(ϕ))=π1−1(ϕ−1(∞0)), but π1−1(ϕ−1(∞0))=ψ−1(π2−1(∞0)), and from Lemma 1 we know that π1−1(∞Ker(ϕ))=∞π−1(Ker(ϕ))=∞ψ−1(π2−1(0)) and ψ−1(π2−1(∞0))=ψ−1(∞π2−1(0)).
So it is enough to prove that ∀A≤C∞(RJ)∞ψ−1(A)=ψ−1(∞A). From Lemma 2 we already have one direction, it remains to show that

The statement a∈∞ψ−1(A) is equivalent to existence of h∈ψ−1(A), s.t. {p∣a(p)=0}={p∣h(p)=0}. The following lemma implies then (2).

Let Ψ:Rm+n→Rm be the projection. Let V⊆Rm be a closed subset. Let f∈C∞(Rm+n) be such that {p∣f(p)=0}=Ψ−1(V). There are g∈C∞(Rm+n), h∈C∞(Rm), s.t. ψ(h)=fg, and {p∣g(p)=0}=Ψ−1(V).
One proves this lemma by finding an h∈C∞(Rm), s.t. {p∣h(p)=0}=V and h∘Ψ vanishes on Ψ−1(V) faster than f. This is easy given the classical theory of infinite orders ([9]). Details are in Appendix A.∎
A similar statement for the R-Jacobson radical is wrong in general. Consider C∞(R)/m0g→C∞(R∖{0})/(m0g), where m0g≤C∞(R) consists of functions having [math] germ at 0∈R. This morphism is injective because a smooth function in a punctured neighbourhood can be extended to the puncture in at most one way, yet RJ0 in the domain is m0/m0g, the ideal of functions that vanish at 0∈R, while in the codomain it is the entire ring.
The following lemma answers the natural question of whether by composing different radicals we get anything new.

In the first row the only non-trivial statement is ∞∞A=∞A. According to Proposition 2, if a∈∞∞A, there is f∈A⊗C∞(R), s.t. f becomes invertible in A⊗C∞(R∖{0}) and f(a)∈∞A. In turn this implies existence of g∈A⊗C∞(R) with the same invertibility properties, and s.t. g(f(a))∈A. Consider f and g as elements of A⊗C∞(R2), via the two different inclusions A⊗C∞(R)⇉A⊗C∞(R2). Then we see that g(f(a))=(g(f))(a). Indeed, let x,y be generators of C∞(R2), then g(f(a)) is the class of g modulo (a−x)+(f−y), which is the same as (g(f))(a)) (reversing the order of division). Inverting x implies inverting f, and then modulo (f−y) it means inverting y, which implies inverting g, thus g(f) becomes invertible in A⊗C∞(R∖{0}) and we conclude that a∈∞A.
Each radical preserves the inclusion relation between ideals (Lemma 2), hence the other rows follow from the first because of Proposition 1.∎
Lemma 2 implies that A↦A/nil0, A↦A/∞0, A↦A/RJ0 canonically extend to functors Rnil,R∞,Rpt:C∞R⟶C∞R.
Definition 3**.**
We will call these functors the nilpotent, ∞- and point reductions. If nilpotent, ∞- or point radical of [math] is again [math], the C∞-ring will be called respectively reduced, ∞- reduced and point reduced.222Finitely generated point reduced C∞-rings are easily identified with the point-determined rings from [12]. However, Example 1 shows that reduced and ∞- reduced C∞-rings do not have similar descriptions in [12].
The corresponding full subcategories of C∞R consisting of reduced C∞-rings will be denoted by C∞Rnil, C∞R∞, C∞Rpt. It is clear (Proposition 1) that we have a sequence of adjunctions

The nilpotent case is well known.
The second statement is obvious in the nilpotent case. In case of ∞−, choosing generators we can assume A1, A2 are free (Lemma 1), and then the claim becomes obvious due to characterization of f∈∞A above.∎
3 Two kinds of de Rham space
3.1 Regularity conditions
Usually an infinitesimal theory requires working with rings that satisfy some regularity conditions. Our constructions of de Rham spaces will also involve this type of assumptions, but they would be rather weak.
Definition 4**.**
Given a functor F:C∞R→C∞R, left adjoint to the inclusion F(C∞R)⊆C∞R, we say that a C∞-ring A is F-projective, if for any A′∈C∞R and any C∞-morphism A→F(A′) there is a lifting in

We will say that X∈C∞Rop is Rnil-injective or R∞-injective, if C∞(X) is Rnil- or R∞-projective respectively.
Since the units for Rnil, R∞ consist of surjective morphisms, it is clear that RI is both Rnil- and R∞-injective for any set I. Here are others.
Example 2**.**
Let U⊆Rn be an open subset (n∈Z≥0). It is known (e.g. [12], Proposition I.1.6) that C∞(U)≅C∞(Rn){f−1} for some f in C∞(Rn). We claim that C∞(U) is both Rnil- and R∞-projective. Let A∈C∞R, let A≤J0≤A be any ideal contained in the Jacobson radical of A. Consider the following diagram of solid arrows

with ϕ being any C∞-morphism. Since C∞(Rn) is free and A→A/A is surjective, we have a lift ψ. As f is invertible in C∞(U), ϕ(f) does not belong to any maximal ideal of A/A. Since A≤J0, the set of maximal ideals in A coincides with the set of pre-images of maximal ideals in A/A. Therefore any pre-mage of ϕ(f) does not belong to any maximal ideal of A, hence it is invertible. In particular ψ(f) is invertible, and ψ factors through C∞(U). Uniqueness of f−1 implies that the entire diagram is commutative. From Proposition 1 we know that nil0≤J0, ∞0≤J0, and we conclude that C∞(U) is both Rnil- and R∞-projective.
Example 3**.**
Let M⊆Rn be a smooth manifold embedded in Rn. It is known that M is a retract of its tubular neighbourhood in Rn, which is Rnil- and R∞-injective (Example 2). Hence any such manifold is Rnil- and R∞-injective as well.
Example 4**.**
Let F:C∞R→C∞R be a functor, left adjoint to the inclusion F(C∞R)⊆C∞R, and let A∈C∞R, s.t. F(A)≅R. For any A′∈C∞R any C∞-morphism A→F(A′) factors through F(A)≅R. Since R is an initial object in C∞R, any R→F(A′) lifts to R→A′. Thus A is F-projective.

Let f:=e−x21∈C∞(R). According to Example 4 the C∞-ring C∞(R)/(f) is R∞-projective. We claim that it is notRnil-projective. We see that Dalg′:={Spec(C∞(X×X)/(mΔ)k)}k∈N is a sub-category of Dalg:={Spec(C∞(X×X)/A)}A∈IΔalg, and every object in Dalg is mapped to an object of Dalg′. Similarly for D∞′:={Spec(C∞(X×X)/(f))}f∈Ξ(Δ) and D∞:={Spec(C∞(X×X)/A)}A∈IΔ∞. Each one of these categories is filtered (Proposition 4), therefore Dalg′⊆Dalg, D∞′⊆D∞ are right cofinal subcategories ([10], Def. 14.2.1), and hence colimits over Dalg′ and D∞′ are isomorphic to colimits over Dalg and respectively D∞ ([10], Thm. 14.2.5).∎
Suppose that X is a manifold, and hence so is X×X. Proposition 6 is very familiar in the algebraic case: (Δ)nil is just the formal neighbourhood of the diagonal obtained by dividing by higher and higher powers of mΔ.
In the ∞-case the situation is more interesting: for a function f in C∞(X×X) we have ∞(f)=mΔ, if and only if f vanishes exactly on the diagonal. As we will see in the following section this implies that (Δ)∞ is the germ of the diagonal.

Since b becomes invertible in A/A, and ab=0, it must be that a∈A.
To prove the second part of the proposition we need to look at rates of vanishing at X′ of upper bounds of functions. The idea is simple: if the upper bound of a function vanishes faster than any infinite order of vanishing, the function must be [math] in a neighbourhood of the closed set. The details are rather technical and we collect them in Appendix B.∎
From Lemma 5 we know that the sets of ideals IX,X′alg and IX,X′∞ are closed with respect to finite intersections, hence they are fundamental systems of neighbourhoods for some linear topologies on A. Proposition 8 tells us that mX,X′g≤A∈IX,X′∞⋂A, i.e. mX,X′g is in the closure of {0}⊆A. Altogether we have the following definition.

Proof.
Both [[X×X]]Xτ and (X×X)Xτ are colimits of neighbourhoods of the diagonal Δ in X×X, therefore the diagonal morphism X→X×X factors through each one of them. Let X∈C∞Rop. Recall that we denote X∙:={X×k+1}k∈Z≥0, together with all the projection and diagonal maps. This is a simplicial object in C∞Ropfg (in fact in C∞Ropfg), and we can compute the corresponding sheaves of homotopy groups. For any X′∈C∞Rop the simplicial set X∙(X′) is the nerve of the contractible groupoid on the set homC∞Rop(X′,X). Therefore this is a contractible Kan complex. So X∙ is not much more than Spec(R). To be precise we need a model structure.
Definition 12**.**
([10], [2], [13]) The global model structure on C∞Ropfg is defined by objectwise weak equivalences and objectwise fibrations. The local model structure on C∞Ropfg has global cofibrations as cofibrations, and its weak equivalences are those morphisms that induce isomorphisms of sheaves of homotopy groups.
Thus to see, if a morphism is a local weak equivalence, we need first to compute the pre-sheaves of homotopy groups, and then sheafify. In particular, every global weak equivalence is also a local weak equivalence. For example ∀X∈C∞Rop the unique morphism X∙→p is a global weak equivalence. Therefore it is also a local weak equivalence. We proceed similarly in the following proposition.
Proposition 11**.**
Suppose X∈C∞Rop is Rnil-injective (respectively R∞-injective). Consider XdR (respectively XdR∞) as a constant simplicial object in C∞Ropfg. Then [[X∙]]Xτ→XdR (respectively (X∙)Xτ→XdR∞) is both a global and a local weak equivalence in (C∞Ropfg)Δ∙op.
Proof.
From Proposition 10 we know that (X∙)Xτ is the nerve of (X,(X×2)Xτ), therefore ∀X′∈C∞Rop the simplicial set (X∙)Xτ(X′) is a Kan complex, and it has vanishing homotopy groups in dimension ≥2. Since X∙ is a contractible groupoid, it is easy to show that also π1((X∙)Xτ(X′)) is trivial. Indeed, let X′∈C∞Rop, and let Φ:X′→(X×2)Xτ, s.t. the two compositions π1∘Φ,π2∘Φ:X′→X are equal. From the definition of (X×2)Xτ it follows ∃A∈IX×2,X∞, s.t. Φ can be represented by ϕ:C∞(X×X)/A→C∞(X′), and π1∘Φ=π2∘Φ means that ϕ∘σ1=ϕ∘σ2, where σ1,σ2:C∞(X)→C∞(X×X)/A are the two inclusions, followed by dividing by A. Thus the composite morphism C∞(X×X)⟶C∞(X×X)/A⟶ϕC∞(X′) factors through the diagonal C∞(X×X)→C∞(X). Since the ideal of the diagonal contains A, this factorization defines a factorization of ϕ, in other words Φ is a degenerate simplex. Finally Proposition 5 tells us that π0((X∙)Xτ(X′))=XdR∞(X′). The nilpotent case is similar.∎
4 Some differential operators and further questions
Let X∈C∞Rop, and suppose it is Rnil- and R∞-injective. For example any manifold would do. We can construct 3 groupoids:
the pair groupoid (X,X×X),
2.
the formal neighbourhood of the diagonal (X,[[X×X]]Xτ),
3.
the germ of the diagonal (X,(X×X)Xτ).
The case of the pair groupoid is very familiar. Here any R-point of X can be mapped to any other. Sections of π1:X×X→X over all of X correspond to smooth morphisms X→X. It is clear that the full pair groupoid cannot give a meaningful infinitesimal theory.
The formal neighbourhood of the diagonal is also well known. There is only one section of π1:[[X×X]]Xτ→X. It is the diagonal. Thus here we do get an infinitesimal theory, which is the usual theory of polynomial differential operators of course. Indeed, for X′:=X×Spec(C∞(R)/(m0)n) diagrams

are in one-to-one correspondence with differential operators of order <n.
The germ of the diagonal is new. Also here the diagonal is the only section of π1:(X×X)Xτ→X, but we get considerably more parameterized sections than in the formal case. Let Φ:Rk×R→Rk be a 1-parameter family of smooth maps Rk→Rk, s.t. Φ∣Rk×{0} is IdRk. It is not difficult to construct an example such that restriction of Φ to the formal neighbourhood of Rk×{0} in Rk×R factors through the projection on Rk, yet for no point p∈R∖{0} is Φ∣Rk×{p} the identity on Rk.
Such Φ gives a section of [[R2k]]Rkτ that factors through the diagonal, yet the corresponding section of (R2k)Rkτ does not. In other words Φ is inaccessible by perturbation, yet it is visible through the ∞- de Rham groupoid.
As we can see ∞- de Rham groupoids give infinitesimal theory beyond perturbation, and we would like to develop the corresponding theory of D-modules. Such development cannot fit within this paper.
Of course, the obvious way is to define D-modules as quasi-coherent sheaves on the de Rham groupoid. The problem is that the notion of a quasi-coherent sheaf of modules is not at all straightforward in C∞-geometry. The straightforward definition works well only for coherent sheaves. This is enough to define polynomial differential operators, since all we require are vector bundles of finite rank on the diagonal. The germ of the diagonal forces us to go beyond coherent sheaves. This is the subject of [6].
We need to find h∈C∞(Rm), s.t. {p∣h(p)=0}=V and ψ(h) is divisible by f within C∞(Rm+n). Were Rm+n compact, we could do this by estimating the rate of vanishing of f at Ψ−1(V). As Rm+n is not compact, we cut it into overlapping compact pieces using closed balls: ∀s∈R let Bs⊆Rm, Bs′⊆Rn be closed balls of radii s centered at the origins, if s<0Bs=Bs′:=∅.
To avoid dealing with signs we estimate from below the rate of vanishing of f2. Let χ∈C∞(Rm) be non-negative and s.t. {p∣χ(p)=0}=V, we define (possibly discontinuous) functions {λs,t:R≥0→R≥0}s,t∈Z≥0 as follows: λs,t(x):=min{(f(q))2∣q∈(χ∘Ψ)−1(x)∩(Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′)} or 1 if (χ∘Ψ)−1(x)∩(Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′)=∅. These functions give minima of f2 on compact pieces of fibers of χ.
To estimate the rate of vanishing of f2 at Ψ−1(V) we need to look at lower bounds of λs,t’s over intervals. We define a sequence of functions R≥0→R≥0 as follows: ∀l∈Nαs,t(l1):=min{λs,t(x)∣x∈[l+11,∞)},777Each αs,t(l1) is well defined and positive, because ((χ∘Ψ)−1[l+11,∞))∩(Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′) is a compact subset of Rm+n∖Ψ−1(V). αs,t is linear on each [l+11,l1], αs,t∣[1,∞)=αs,t(1) and αs,t(0):=0. Each αs,t is continuous, weakly monotonically increasing and {x∣αs,t(x)=0}={0}.
These functions, composed with χ, estimate from below the rate of vanishing of f2 at compact pieces of Ψ−1(V): let W:=(χ∘Ψ)−1([0,1)), it is an open neighbourhood of Ψ−1(V), s.t. ∀s,t∈Z≥0(f(q))2≥αs,t(χ(Ψ(q))) for all q∈W∩(Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′). Indeed, let q∈W, by construction χ(Ψ(q))∈[l+11,l1] for some l≥1, and if q∈Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′, then αs,t(χ(Ψ(q)))≤αs,t(l1)=min(λs,t(x)∣x∈[l+11,∞))≤(f(q))2, since q∈(χ∘Ψ)−1([l+11,∞))∩(Bs+1∖Bs−1×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′).
We can glue αs,t’s into a sequence of functions on Rm: let {ϵs}s∈Z≥0 be a smooth partition of unity on Rm, s.t. {p∣ϵs(p)>0}⊆Bs+32∖Bs−32. For each t≥0s≥0∑ϵs(p)αs,t(χ(p)) is a continuous non-negative function on Rm that vanishes exactly on V. Moreover, for each q∈W∩(Rm×Bt+1′∖Bt−1′) we have (f(q))2≥s≥0∑ϵs(Ψ(q))αs,t(χ(Ψ(q))).
For each s∈Z≥0 instead of a sequence {αs,t}t∈Z≥0 of continuous functions we would like to find one smooth function, that vanishes at [math] faster than any power of each one of αs,t’s. A very old theorem by du Bois-Reymond ([9], page 10) lets us do it. Here is a variation of this result.
Proposition 12**.**
Let {αt}t∈Z≥0 be a sequence of continuous weakly monotonically increasing functions R≥0→R≥0, s.t. ∀t{x∣αt(x)=0}={0}. There is non-negative α∈C∞(R), s.t. {x∣α(x)=0}=R≤0 and ∀t,k∈Z≥0x→0lim(αt(x))kα(x)=0.
Proof.
It is clear that, given another sequence {αt′}, s.t. ∀tαt′≤αt on [0,1], if we prove the statement for {αt′}, it would follow for {αt} as well. Thus, dividing each αt by max(2,x∈[0,1]maxα(x)), we can assume that ∀t≥0∀x∈[0,1]αt(x)<1. In turn, putting αt′:=α0⋅…⋅αt, we can assume that ∀t≥0∀x∈(0,1]αt+1(x)<αt(x) and x→0limαt(x)αt+1(x)=0.
Now we define a piece-wise linear β:R≥0→R≥0 as follows: ∀t∈Nβ(t1):=αt(t1), on [t+11,t1]β is linear, β(0):=0 and β∣[1,∞)=β(1). It is clear that β is continuous, and since αt’s are assumed to be increasing and ∀tαt+1<αt on [0,1], β is weakly monotonically increasing as well.
By construction ∀t∈N the subset of [t+11,t1] where β and αt agree is not empty, let xt be the smallest element of this subset, since αt+1(t+11)<αt(t+11) it is clear that xt>t+11. We define γ:R≥0→R≥0 as follows: ∀tγ∣[t+11,xt]:=β, γ∣[xt,t1]:=αt, γ∣[1,∞)=γ(1), γ(0):=0. It is easy to see that γ is continuous weakly monotonically increasing and {x∣γ(x)=0}={0}. Moreover, ∀t∈N,∀x∈(0,t+11] we have γ(x)<αt(x). This is true because ∀t′>tγ∣[t′+11,t′1]≤αt′∣[t′+11,t′1]<αt∣[t+11,t1].
Since γ is continuous and weakly monotonically increasing, we can find ϕ∈C∞(R), s.t. {x∣ϕ(x)=0}=R≤0 and ϕ∣R≥0≤γ, e.g. we can extend γ by [math] to all of R and apply the following trivial lemma to γ(−x).
Lemma 11**.**
Let γ:R→R be continuous and weakly monotonically decreasing, and s.t. {x∈R∣γ(x)=0}={x<0}. Let ϵ∈C∞(R), s.t. 0≤ϵ(x)≤1 and supp(ϵ)=[−1,0]. Let ϵ∗γ be the convolution. It is smooth, weakly monotonically decreasing, 0≤(ϵ∗γ)(x)≤γ(x) for all x, and {x∈R∣(ϵ∗γ)(x)=0}={x<0}.
Proof.
By definition (ϵ∗γ)(x)=∫Rϵ(x−y)γ(y)dy. For any y≥0 we have γ(y)=0, and, if x≥0, for any y<0 we have ϵ(x−y)=0. Therefore for any x≥0 we have ϵ(x−y)γ(y)=0, and hence (ϵ∗γ)(x)=0 for x≥0.
If x<0, the function ϵ(x−y)γ(y) is not constantly [math], as a function of y. Indeed, if y<0 and simultaneously x<y<x+1, then γ(y)>0 and simultaneously ϵ(x−y)>0. Therefore, since both γ and ϵ are non-negative functions, (ϵ∗γ)(x)>0 for all x<0.
For any x<0 we have ϵ(x−y)γ(y)≤γ(x), ∀y∈R. Indeed, ϵ(x−y)≤1 and hence ϵ(x−y)γ(y)≤γ(y), and since γ is monotonically decreasing, we obtain the inequality for y≥x. For y<x we have x−y>0, and hence ϵ(x−y)=0. Thus the inequality holds for all y. Since supp(ϵ)=[−1,0], support of ϵ(x−y)f(y) as a function of y is contained in an interval of length 1. Altogether we conclude that (ϵ∗γ)(x)≤γ(x)⋅1=γ(x).∎

Applying Proposition 12 to {αs,t}t∈Z≥0 for each s∈Z≥0, we obtain a sequence {αs}s∈Z≥0 in C∞(R). Let h:=s≥0∑ϵs⋅(αs∘χ). We claim that f2 divides h∘Ψ in C∞(Rm+n). Indeed, the ratio f2h∘Ψ is a smooth function on Rm+n∖Ψ−1(V), and we extend it by [math] to all of Rm+n.
