Benjamin L\"owe

TL;DR
This paper reports the development and testing of a nitrogen gas-based positron moderator that slows and focuses positrons for analysis, combining experimental setup, simulations, and energy measurement techniques.
Contribution
It introduces a novel gas moderator setup for positrons using nitrogen, with optimized electric fields and energy analysis, validated through experiments and simulations.
Findings
Positron beam was successfully moderated in nitrogen gas.
Electric field optimization improved positron focusing.
Moderated positrons were observed at the NEPOMUC beam.
Abstract
(Translated Title: Development of a positron gas moderator) In this work a positron moderator that is based on inelastic positron scattering in nitrogen gas has been developed and set-up. A positron beam enters a gas cell through a small aperture. In the cell the positrons lose kinetic energy through collisions with the nitrogen molecules. By means of an electric field the positrons are then focused towards an exit where their kinetic energy is analysed. During measurements at the NEPOMUC beam moderated positrons could be observed.
