Measurement of the total cross section from elastic scattering in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
ATLAS Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports a precise measurement of the total proton-proton cross section at 8 TeV using elastic scattering data from the ATLAS detector, providing key insights into proton interactions at high energies.
Contribution
It presents the first measurement of the total $pp$ cross section at 8 TeV with the ATLAS ALFA detector using a novel extrapolation method to $t ightarrow 0$.
Findings
Total cross section measured as 96.07 mb with uncertainties.
Elastic scattering slope parameter B determined as 19.74 GeV$^{-2}$.
Differential elastic cross section fitted in the low-$t$ range.
Abstract
A measurement of the total cross section at the LHC at TeV is presented. An integrated luminosity of b was accumulated in a special run with high- beam optics to measure the differential elastic cross section as a function of the Mandelstam momentum transfer variable . The measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of ATLAS. Using a fit to the differential elastic cross section in the range from GeV to GeV to extrapolate , the total cross section, , is measured via the optical theorem to be: where the first error is statistical, the second accounts for all experimental systematic uncertainties and the last is…
