Yuxiang Yang, Giulio Chiribella, and Masahito Hayashi

TL;DR
This paper determines the fundamental limits of compressing sequences of identical qubits using Holevo's information, demonstrating that optimal universal cloning machines can achieve these limits, thus advancing quantum Shannon theory.
Contribution
It introduces a novel application of universal cloning machines to attain the ultimate compression limits for identical qubit sequences based on Holevo's information.
Findings
Compression limits are set by Holevo's information.
Universal cloning machines can achieve these limits.
The work advances understanding of quantum data compression.
Abstract
We establish the ultimate limits to the compression of sequences of identically prepared qubits. The limits are determined by Holevo's information quantity and are attained through use of the optimal universal cloning machine, which finds here a novel application to quantum Shannon theory.
