Geons as wormholes of modified gravity
Gonzalo J. Olmo, Diego Rubiera-Garcia

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that in a Palatini modified gravity framework, wormhole solutions can exist without violating energy conditions, effectively acting as geons—self-sustained electromagnetic bodies without sources.
Contribution
It provides explicit wormhole solutions in Palatini gravity that realize Wheeler's geon concept as source-free electromagnetic self-consistent structures.
Findings
Wormholes can exist without energy condition violations in Palatini gravity.
The solutions represent geons—self-sustained electromagnetic entities.
These geometries are explicit realizations of Wheeler's geon concept.
Abstract
Wormholes may arise as solutions of extensions of General Relativity without violation of the energy conditions. Working in a Palatini approach we consider classical geometries supporting such wormholes. It is shown that the resulting space-times represent explicit realizations of the concept of geon introduced by Wheeler, interpreted as self-consistent bodies generated by an electromagnetic field without sources.
