Ranking scientists
S. N. Dorogovtsev, J. F. F. Mendes

TL;DR
This paper critiques the $h$-index for ranking scientists, highlighting its biases, and proposes a new, simple criterion for more accurate scientist ranking.
Contribution
It introduces a novel, straightforward criterion for ranking scientists that addresses the biases of the $h$-index.
Findings
The $h$-index favors modestly performing researchers.
A new criterion provides a more accurate ranking.
The proposed method improves ranking fairness.
Abstract
Currently the ranking of scientists is based on the -index, which is widely perceived as an imprecise and simplistic though still useful metric. We find that the -index actually favours modestly performing researchers and propose a simple criterion for proper ranking.
