ATLAS Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports the measurement of the single top quark production cross-section in association with a W boson at 8 TeV using ATLAS data, achieving a significance of 7.7 sigma and extracting fundamental parameters like |Vtb|.
Contribution
First measurement of the Wt single top production cross-section at 8 TeV with detailed analysis and extraction of |Vtb| and lower limits.
Findings
Measured cross-section: 23.0 pb with uncertainties.
Observed production with 7.7 sigma significance.
Extracted |Vtb| value of 1.01 ± 0.10.
Abstract
The cross-section for the production of a single top quark in association with a boson in proton--proton collisions at TeV is measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb, collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Events containing two leptons and one central -jet are selected. The signal is separated from the backgrounds using boosted decision trees, each of which combines a number of discriminating variables into one classifier. Production of events is observed with a significance of . The cross-section is extracted in a profile likelihood fit to the classifier output distributions. The cross-section, inclusive of decay modes, is measured to be (stat.)(syst.)(lumi.) pb. The measured cross-section is used to extract a value for…
