TL;DR
This paper reports a precise measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 5d$^2$D$_{5/2}$ state in a single trapped Ba$^+$ ion, achieving a value of approximately 26.4 seconds in ultra-high vacuum conditions.
Contribution
The study provides the first high-precision lifetime measurement of the Ba$^+$ 5d$^2$D$_{5/2}$ state using single-ion trapping and extrapolation techniques.
Findings
Lifetime of 26.4 seconds with 1.7 seconds uncertainty
Recorded over 5000 individual shelved periods
Extrapolated to zero residual gas pressure
Abstract
The lifetime of the metastable 5dD state has been measured for a single trapped Ba ion in a Paul trap in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) in the 10 mbar pressure range. A total of 5046 individual periods when the ion was shelved in this state have been recorded. A preliminary value ~s is obtained through extrapolation to zero residual gas pressure.
