Bernd Franz, Liaquat Ali, Laurent Schmalen, Wilfried Idler

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates high-speed data transmission over 5 km of GI-MMF using mode group division multiplexing, achieving 4x28 Gbit/s with simple detection methods, emphasizing mode group selectivity.
Contribution
It introduces a mode group division multiplexing approach for high-speed data transmission over GI-MMF with direct detection, highlighting mode group selectivity as crucial.
Findings
Achieved 4x28 Gbit/s over 5 km GI-MMF
Mode group selectivity is essential for effective multiplexing
Direct detection with OOK is feasible for high-speed transmission
Abstract
We transmitted 4x28 Gbit/s over 5-km standard GI-MMF using four different mode groups in combination with direct detection and on-off-keying format (OOK). Due to the square-law detection in the receiver MIMO processing is not effective. Therefore proper mode group selective multiplexing and de-multiplexing is essential.
