TL;DR
This paper demonstrates the possibility of mechanical twinning in smectic crystals, characterizes the twin boundary structure for small disorientations, and proposes a periodic twin pattern under tension.
Contribution
It introduces the concept of twinning in smectic crystals, detailing boundary structures and predicting a periodic twin pattern during tension.
Findings
Twinning in smectic crystals is feasible.
Boundary structures depend on small disorientations.
A periodic twin structure is proposed under tension.
Abstract
It is shown that mechanical twinning in smectic crystals is possible. The structure of the boundary of twins for a small disorientation of crystallites is determined. The periodic twin structure, which should appear at the tension of the smectic layer, is proposed.
