Observation of the Production of a W Boson in Association with a Single Charm Quark
CDF Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports the first observation of W boson production with a single charm quark in proton-antiproton collisions, measuring the cross section and deriving the CKM matrix element |V_{cs}|, confirming theoretical predictions.
Contribution
First observation of W+c production in proton-antiproton collisions, with cross section measurement and extraction of |V_{cs}|, advancing understanding of electroweak interactions and quark mixing.
Findings
Wc production observed with 5.7 sigma significance.
Measured cross section: 13.6 pb with uncertainties.
Derived |V_{cs}|=1.08±0.16 and lower limit >0.71.
Abstract
The first observation of the production of a boson with a single charm quark () jet in collisions at is reported. The analysis uses data corresponding to 4.3 fb, recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Charm quark candidates are selected through the identification of an electron or muon from charm-hadron semileptonic decay within a hadronic jet, and a signal is observed with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The production cross section is measured to be and is in agreement with theoretical expectations. From this result the magnitude of the quark-mixing matrix element is derived, along with a lower limit of at the 95% confidence level, assuming…
