Musical Modes, Their Associated Chords and Their Musicality
Mihail Cocos, Kent Kidman

TL;DR
This paper introduces a mathematical framework for defining musical modes and quantifies their musicality based on three factors, leading to a classification of the most musical modes.
Contribution
It presents a novel mathematical approach to defining and evaluating musical modes and their musicality, which was not previously formalized.
Findings
Identification of the most musical modes according to the proposed measure
A new mathematical model for mode classification
Quantitative assessment of musicality factors
Abstract
In this paper we present a mathematical way of defining musical modes and we define the musicality of a mode as a product of three different factors. We conclude by classifying the modes which are most musical according to our definition.
