Diffusive instability of a Townsend discharge
V. V. Mikhailenko, H. J. Lee, V. S. Mikhailenko

TL;DR
This paper investigates how electron diffusion affects the stability of Townsend discharges, revealing that diffusion can destabilize the discharge by altering the conditions for its steady self-sustenance.
Contribution
It introduces the impact of electron diffusion on Townsend discharge stability, providing new insights into the conditions for discharge stability and instability.
Findings
Electron diffusion modifies the stability condition of Townsend discharges.
Electron diffusion can lead to discharge instability.
Diffusion influences the criteria for self-sustenance of the discharge.
Abstract
The role of the electron diffusion on the stability of a Townsend discharge is investigated. It is obtained, that electron diffusion modifies the condition of the steady self-sustenance of the discharge, and make discharge unstable.
