Photostimulated spin-flip and the photodynamic therapeutic effect of fullerene solutions
Elena F. Sheka

TL;DR
This paper proposes a new mechanism for the photodynamic therapeutic effect of fullerene solutions, based on electron spin flips in oxygen molecules near fullerene ions, which enhances oxidative activity.
Contribution
It introduces a novel mechanism involving electron spin flips in oxygen molecules near fullerene ions to explain the therapeutic effects.
Findings
High oxidative activity of C60(-)-O2 and C60(+)-O2 complexes.
Spin flip of electrons in oxygen molecules is key to the therapeutic effect.
New theoretical foundation for fullerene-based photodynamic therapy.
Abstract
A new mechanism of photodynamic therapeutic effect of fullerene solution is suggested. Spin flip of electrons in oxygen molecule in the vicinity of negative-positive ion pair of fullerene lays the foundation of high oxidative activity of complexes C60(minus) -O2 and C60(plus)-O2.
