TL;DR
This paper validates a Van Der Pol wake oscillator model for 2D vortex-induced vibrations of a cylinder, showing good agreement with experiments and proposing it as a simple predictive tool.
Contribution
It introduces the first 2D phenomenological wake oscillator model for cylinder VIV and validates it against experimental data.
Findings
Model accurately predicts 2D VIV responses
Good agreement between numerical and experimental results
Proposed model is a useful simple prediction tool
Abstract
Experimental results are used to validate a 2D phenomenological model of the near wake based on Van Der Pol wake oscillators, which is the first one which describes the 2D motion of a cylinder in its transversal plan. In the case of a single cylinder, experimental and numerical results are in relatively good agreement. Those first results show that the proposed model can be used as a simple computation tool in the prediction of 2D VIV effects.
