## TL;DR

This paper introduces a quick method to prepare RNA for detecting COVID-19 without needing traditional RNA extraction.

## Contribution

A novel rapid RNA preparation protocol that eliminates the need for RNA extraction reagents.

## Key findings

- The protocol is compatible with RT-qPCR-based detection methods.
- It addresses reagent shortages by bypassing traditional RNA extraction.

## Abstract

RNA extraction has become a bottleneck for detection of COVID-19, in part because of reagent shortages. We present here a rapid protocol that circumvents the need for RNA extraction that is compatible with RT-qPCR-based detection methods.
