Random close packing in a granular model
D. Aristoff, C. Radin

TL;DR
This paper presents a 2D lattice model of granular matter demonstrating an order/disorder phase transition, providing insights into the phenomenon of random close packing through proof and simulation.
Contribution
It introduces a novel lattice model for granular matter that captures the random close packing phenomenon via phase transition analysis.
Findings
Identification of an order/disorder phase transition
Demonstration of random close packing in the model
Use of proof and simulation methods
Abstract
We introduce a 2-dimensional lattice model of granular matter. We use a combination of proof and simulation to demonstrate an order/disorder phase transition in the model, to which we associate the granular phenomenon of random close packing.
