Strongly Focused Gravitational Waves
Michael Reiterer (ETH Zurich), Eugene Trubowitz (ETH Zurich)

TL;DR
This paper presents a new, independent proof demonstrating how gravitational waves in vacuum spacetimes can focus to form trapped spheres, extending Christodoulou's foundational work with a different logical approach.
Contribution
It provides a novel, logically independent proof of trapped sphere formation caused by gravitational wave focusing in vacuum spacetimes.
Findings
New proof of trapped sphere formation by gravitational waves
Extension of Christodoulou's results with independent construction
Enhanced understanding of gravitational wave focusing mechanisms
Abstract
This paper contains a new proof of the formation of trapped spheres, in vacuum spacetimes, by the focusing of gravitational waves, from generic data. The first such result was obtained by Christodoulou [Chr]. We exploit the same physical mechanism, but give a logically independent construction of these spacetimes.
