TL;DR
This paper explains the fundamental states of matter—solids, liquids, and gases—and introduces granular matter, highlighting its unique behaviors that resemble both solids and liquids, aimed at a school audience.
Contribution
It provides an accessible explanation of states of matter and introduces granular matter's dual behavior, tailored for educational purposes.
Findings
Granular matter exhibits both solid-like and liquid-like properties.
Solids, liquids, and gases are distinguished by their physical characteristics.
Granular matter's behavior varies depending on conditions.
Abstract
This is a written version of a popular science talk for school children given on India's National Science Day 2009 at Mumbai. I discuss what distinguishes solids, liquids and gases from each other. I discuss briefly granular matter that in some ways behave like solids, and in other ways like liquids.
