Landau Damping and Alfven Eigenmodes of Neutron Star Torsion Oscillations
Andrei Gruzinov

TL;DR
This paper investigates how neutron star crust torsion oscillations are damped by the Alfven continuum and identifies conditions under which undamped Alfven eigenmodes can exist in magnetars with strong magnetic fields.
Contribution
It reveals the conditions for the emergence of undamped Alfven eigenmodes in magnetars, advancing understanding of neutron star oscillation dynamics.
Findings
Torsion oscillations are Landau damped by the Alfven continuum.
Strong magnetic fields enable undamped Alfven eigenmodes.
Implications for neutron star seismology and magnetic field diagnostics.
Abstract
Torsion oscillations of the neutron star crust are Landau damped by the Alfven continuum in the bulk. For strong magnetic fields (in magnetars), undamped Alfven eigenmodes appear.
