TL;DR
This paper discusses data-driven methods developed by the ATLAS Collaboration to estimate Standard Model backgrounds from W, Z, and top quark processes, crucial for Supersymmetry searches at the LHC.
Contribution
It introduces novel data-driven background estimation techniques specifically tailored for early ATLAS data in SUSY searches.
Findings
Effective background estimation methods demonstrated
Improved accuracy in background predictions
Framework applicable to initial LHC data analyses
Abstract
The Standard Model processes of W, Z and top quark production in association with jets constitute a major background to searches for Supersymmetry at the LHC. We describe recent work performed in the ATLAS Collaboration to estimate these backgrounds for a basic SUSY selection, and we discuss methods to derive them from the first ATLAS data.
