The running of the coupling in SU(N) pure gauge theories
Biagio Lucini, Gregory Moraitis

TL;DR
This study investigates the running of the coupling in SU(N) pure gauge theories, confirming perturbative predictions at high energies and estimating the ratio of Lambda_MSbar to the square root of the string tension for N=2,3,4.
Contribution
It provides non-perturbative calculations of the coupling running in SU(4) and estimates the Lambda_MSbar to string tension ratio, extending results to the large N limit and comparing with other schemes.
Findings
Running agrees with two-loop perturbative formula up to high energies.
Estimated ratio Lambda_MSbar / sqrt(sigma) for N=3,4, consistent with previous studies.
Discrepancy of 2.5% in SU(2) results compared to other schemes is discussed.
Abstract
The running of the coupling is studied in SU(4) gauge theory using the Schr\"odinger functional technique. Up to energies of the order of the square root of the string tension , the running is found to agree with the two-loop perturbative formula. Relating the perturbative to the non-perturbative regime of the running and converting to the scheme allows one to extract the ratio . The result is then used in combination with similar calculations present in the literature for SU(2) and SU(3) to extract in the large limit. Our results for agree with a recent study of the same quantity performed using the Parisi mean field scheme as an intermediate scheme, while in SU(2) turns out to differ by 2.5%. Possible explanations of this discrepancy are discussed.
