On the electromagnetic properties of active media
Bertil Nistad, Johannes Skaar

TL;DR
This paper investigates the electromagnetic characteristics of active media and metamaterials, focusing on permittivity, permeability, wave vector, and refractive index, while analyzing stability, refraction, gain, and causality constraints.
Contribution
It provides new theoretical insights into the fundamental electromagnetic properties and limitations of active media and metamaterials.
Findings
Discussion of stability conditions for active media
Analysis of refraction and gain in metamaterials
Identification of fundamental causality limitations
Abstract
Several results concerning active media or metamaterials are proved and discussed. In particular, we consider the permittivity, permeability, wave vector, and refractive index, and discuss stability, refraction, gain, and fundamental limitations resulting from causality.
