A viability criterion for modified gravity with an extra force
Valerio Faraoni (Bishop's University)

TL;DR
This paper discusses a modified gravity theory with an anomalous matter-curvature coupling and derives a key inequality to ensure the theory's stability against Dolgov-Kawasaki instability.
Contribution
It introduces a specific viability criterion for a class of modified gravity theories with extra forces, ensuring their stability.
Findings
Derived a necessary and sufficient inequality for stability.
Identified conditions to avoid Dolgov-Kawasaki instability.
Provided a criterion applicable to modified gravity models with anomalous couplings.
Abstract
A recently proposed theory of modified gravity with an explicit ``anomalous'' coupling of the Ricci curvature to matter is discussed, and an inequality is derived which expresses a necessary and sufficient condition to avoid the notorius Dolgov-Kawasaki instability.
