TL;DR
This paper evaluates the theoretical uncertainties in calculating the total charm quark production cross section, emphasizing the impact of quark mass, scale choice, and parton densities, and highlighting the difficulty in quantifying these uncertainties.
Contribution
It provides a detailed analysis of the factors affecting the theoretical prediction of the charm cross section and discusses the challenges in uncertainty quantification.
Findings
Uncertainty in charm cross section is significant due to small quark mass.
Quark mass, scale choice, and parton densities critically influence the estimates.
Quantifying the total uncertainty remains challenging.
Abstract
We assess the theoretical uncertainties on the total charm cross section. We discuss the importance of the quark mass, the scale choice and the parton densities on the estimate of the uncertainty. We conclude that due to the small charm quark mass, which amplifies the effect of the other parameters in the calculation, the uncertainty on the total charm cross section is difficult to quantify.
